The Numbers Game: Nicki Minaj is #1

As if it was a surprise to anyone, Nicki Minaj‘s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded easily took the #1 spot & sold 254,000 copies in it’s first week. Now, to keep it in perspective, these first week numbers aren’t exactly huge. When compared to the orignal Pink Friday (Which did 376,000 in it’s first week) or even recent releases from her YMCMB brethren Drake & Lil’ Wayne, it can feel like she was suppose to more. But on the bright side, 250,000+ units isn’t nothing to sneeze at plus I don’t she’ll her having a problem going Platinum. [Check out our review of Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded here]

  • Obie Trice‘s returns to the charts after a 6 year absence with Bottoms Up at #130. I haven’t checked it out yet but it does include a verse from Eminem as well as a beat from Dr. Dre. It’s in my listening queue.
  • As much as I love De La Soul (“Stakes Is High” is still one of my favorite songs ever), I just couldn’t get into this album. It’s a conceptual album that only includes 2/3 of the members but the reviews have been good so I may have to give it another listen. First Serve lands at #192.
  • Damn. Madonna‘s new album MDNA had the biggest sales drop in history going from #1 and selling 359,000 last week to selling 46,000 this week (That’s a 88% decline). I heard they gave this album for free when you bought a Madonna concert ticket. If that’s true this makes sense.

Hip-Hop + R&B sales for the week of April 3rd

Young Barry White. The geek out of the bunch. He is also Jay-Z’s biggest fan. He looks like your cousin from the burbs. He is “Pro Black” (not anti-white, just “Pro Black”). Probably the wittiest out of the bunch. It is said that he got fired from the same job three times.

I hope the Madonna thing is true if not that is terrible business but I bet when she pass away one day that’s when her album sales are going to go through the roof. Anyway Nicki did well considering the album is garbage. I don’t see her going Plat fast like she did with the first album. I’ll give her 6 months for this to go plat. De La Soul had another album out? I stop fucking with their new shit after I bought that album with the single they had Redman called “Ooh”, that album was a big disappointment to me (Stakes Is High album was dope though). Tyga album should have sold more it was actually a pretty good album

So Tyga officially put to rest  my claim that YMCMB just moves units…then again, I have to say if he wasn’t YMCMB….his numbers would look even worse. I don’t know what else Nicki can do to get sales. If she ain’t doing better than that the first week, iono if she’ll make plat this time around. She’s been heavy on the circuit for promotion…that 250 is a bit of a let down imo.

What’s funny to me is that Tyga has the secOnd best album from YMCMB since 2010

  • DJ LP

How many copies did Birdman buy?
