Ha! You thought I wasn’t gonna make this Numbers Game in time did you? Okay, so you probably didn’t really care, but let me keep fronting. This week we only have one big debut in terms of Hip-Hop. That lone spot is held by Mr. “Dark Butts” himself, Yung Berg. I guess having a video on TRL doesn’t guarantee heavy sales anymore as Berg pushes 20,000 copies of Look What You Made Me (I guess that’s not too bad considering who you ask). I also realized that after 12 weeks, Usher’s Here I Stand STILL hasn’t push Platinum (And somewhere Dark Angel is crying). He’s been sitting at 900,000 for a few weeks now. Looks like Wayne is finally stalling out after making a monster run with Tha Carter III (I guess you were wrong about Weezy pushing 5 million huh Slik?). Other than that, it’s mostly the same. Shall we…

When I personally asked King Jerm for this album to review, he thought I was crazy: there has been a lot of talk about Yung Berg; his comments about “dark butts”…don’t get me started on that one. I chose this album to review because, despite my own mixed feelings about Berg, I feel that I’d be fairest opinion on staff, being the youngest and the one who doesn’t completely hate Berg. You’d think he would be a rapper like 50 Cent: igniting fire and beefs everywhere he looks, but still making good music. You’d be wrong there: Berg’s EP was mediocre; it was driven by “Sexy Lady”, which was alright, but definitely nothing to write home about. Well, one year after his debut EP, Berg has dropped his album, Look What You Made Me. Can Berg rise above all the hatred aimed at him and avoid being listed as a lame in the Hip-Hop business forever? Let’s just say I’m not setting my standards too high, but let’s see what we’ve got here.

Intro
Wow. I wasn’t expecting this kind of track from Berg. To be honest, the beat actually sounds like “The Ruler’s Back” from The Blueprint, one of my favorite Hip-Hop albums. Berg starts out talking about how frustrated he is with people on blogs and YouTube talking shit, but how he’s not going to let it stop him. That said, Berg doesn’t really do the track justice in terms of lyrics and flows, which is a damn shame, because I bet that if someone else his age, like Bow Wow jumped on this track, they would go straight for the throat. An excellent beat is almost wasted here; he should’ve made it longer and actually thought out his shit and it would’ve been a lot more epic, but the way it is now, it’s just so-so.

Look What You Made Me
Produced by Rob Holiday
I don’t know who’s doing the vocoder shit in the beginning, it’s really annoying. Then the beat comes in, and it’s fire again. Hold up! I know Berg is not talking about whether Hip-Hop is dead or alive. This is the nigga’s first album! Damn! But I digress, it’s all about how Yung Berg used the music he listened to raise him, like Snoop Dogg is the reason he rides in coupes…Biggie’s the reason he tries to move units…yeah I’m not really feeling the lines on this one, mostly because I know none of it is true. One line that made me laugh was when he said: “Blame Jay-Z for me doing it how I do it”. Make an album better than Vol. 1: In My Lifetime…, and then we’ll talk. Once again, I’m liking the beat on this, Berg just isn’t doing it justice. It’s like I’d rather listen to just the beat instead of the vocals, which is really sad. And what the f*&k is with the singing at the end?!?? I give Berg credit for clever wordplay, but this beat should have gone to someone who can actually use it. Average track.

Sexy Can I
Featuring Ray J; Produced by Noel “Detail” Fisher
I can’t believe Yung Berg had the nerve to put this on his album. This Ray J’s song! I hate to be hard on Berg like this, but damn; people are listening to this song because of the addictive hook. Berg spits less than 16 bars on this track! At least when Snoop Dogg did the same thing, he spit two sizable verses when he put “I Wanna Fuck You” on his Blue Carpet Treatment. Maybe I’m just mad because I like this song; when this song came out for Ray J’s album, I was banging this song for real. I still keep this song on repeat sometimes. By the way, when Berg says “Fresh out the pool, no towel let it air dry”, does anyone see the infamous “Pool Test” reference there? Great song, probably the best on the album.

Do That There
Featuring Dude ‘n’ Nem; Produced by Xcel
I first thought this was a sample from Nelly on his verse from “Get Loose”, but I wrong, it was Dude ‘n’ Nem (Who ever that is). At first, I had to say this song is kind of hot, I was surprised it didn’t make a bigger splash on the Hot 100. This is the infamous track where he gets at Bow Wow with: “Wanna be like me, this is what you better do/Eat all ya Scooby snacks and clear a whole plate of vegetables”. Lame! I’m glad he squashed his beat with Bow Wow, cause he would probably eat him alive. Only problem with this song is the hook gets on you’re nerves big time after awhile. Like the last two tracks, the beat is killer, but Berg isn’t saying anything and the hook is awful! I don’t think I need to say it; you’ll listen to this track once, then skip it the rest of the time.

The Business
Featuring Casha; Produced by Rob Holiday
Berg calls this timeless music…no comment. Anyway, this song is all about the auto-tune effect, which to honest, I’m getting kind of tired of: EVERYONE is using it, and only T-Pain sounds good with it, but Kanye, Lil Wayne, and Jay-Z weirdly enough all sounded alright with it. Casha sounds good on it, and Berg is trying a faster flow on this one. It’s one of those candy-glossed up “Pop Raps” that become hot singles nowadays. As a track its good, a nice relaxing vibe kind of thing going on. On a side note, I like how cohesive Berg’s album is; one track flows nicely into the other.

Interlude
The beat here is the exact same one from the “Intro”. Why waste time with an interlude when you could’ve just pasted this on the back of the intro and had a hot intro?? This is about 1 minute long, and Berg isn’t saying anything…again. Oh wait, there was this one line that made me laugh again: “Once again I’m a product what you made me/Solid as a rock, I coulda signed with Jay-Z”. I doubt Hov would even think about signing Berg. This track isn’t even really needed…SKIP!!

Where Do We Go
Featuring Twista; Produced by JFK
As soon as I saw Twista on the track, I knew what was coming; everytime a rapper is on the same track with Twista, they always have to try to rhyme as fast as him or at a much faster pace than they usually can. Kanye, I think, was the only smart one who didn’t and flowed at his own pace letting Twista do his thing. Actually, Berg does well on a track like this, and actually finally sounds good on a beat like this, finally using it! The hook is just Berg talking about where he plans to go from where he is. Of course, Twista absolutely bodies Berg on this; the way he raps that quick continues to amaze me. Overall, Berg flows well, not as good as Twista, but well. This a decent track; maybe the “Interlude” was supposed actually separate the bad songs from the decent songs?

Sexy Lady
Featuring Junior; Produced by Rob Holiday
Oh no! This again? Really? That said, this song is the song that had Berg at his most lyrical when it came out, with lines like: “Damn right, you know baby girl is the shit/She like it when I throw her deep like Micheal Vick”, and “Damn right baby girl’s a diva/But when she with me she be blowin’ reefa/In the coupe lookin’ better than the Mona Lisa”. Clever lines like that make Berg an average rapper at best. But this song is so played out I can’t bring myself to listen to it any more, but that’s just my opinion.

One Night
Featuring Trey Songz; Produced by JFK
I wonder what this one’s about. This song is terrible, SKIP!

Manager
Featuring Lloyd; Produced by Mr. Collipark
The production by Mr. Collipark here is simply horrible; the parts where Yung Berg rap are annoying as sin, but when Lloyd sings the chorus, it’s actually a decent song. But then Yung Berg’s part came back on and I couldn’t take any more. And by the way, I really hate Mr. Collipark’s productions; he thinks he knows what 16 year-olds like, but this shit sucks! SKIP…

Interlude
Another interlude?? Damn! You know there’s something horribly wrong with this album when Yung Berg starts off by saying: “Congradulations, I see you’re still rockin’ wit me”, like surviving this album will win me a gold medal or some shit. You know the deal, same beat as “Intro”, only 2 minutes long. He really should have just made a killer intro, because the more I hear this track, the more I hate it. SKIP!!

If You Only Knew
Featuring Casha; Produced by JFK
FINALLY!! A good track! This probably should have been the first single for real. I mean, out of all the songs I’ve heard (and “Sexy Can I” doesn’t count), this is without a doubt the best. Berg is even actually spittin’ some good shit: “I lost one like Jay-Z so I gotta make the song cry”, and “I gotta put her on the ice like Gretsky”. Casha finally sings a little without the auto-tune device and it works well. I’d actually keep this song on repeat. There are only 3 more tracks left, let’s see if Berg can salvage what’s left of the album. Once again, on a little side note, this album really does flow well; each track slides slowly into the next one, I like that.

Outerspace
Produced by Rob Holiday
What the fuck!! Berg, what happened…? This entire song is him getting his T-Pain on, for real. No guest singers at all, no rapping, just T-Pain like singing…no comment. Why the hell did I ask for this again? SKIP SKIP SKIP!!!

Get Your Number
Featuring Amerie; Produced by Boogz
Berg does what he’s…average at, and keeps to rapping, thank god. Amerie takes the singing, as it should be. Berg goes back to the speedy flow that he did in that song with Twista, which actually isn’t too bad. It’s a so-so song, maybe I’m still just pissed off after that “Outerspace” bullshit.

Victory Lap
Featuring Eve & Collie Buddz; Produced by Rob Holiday
What the hell? This is song is over 10 minutes long! Only reason I hung in there for the nappyafro crew is I heard there was a bonus song, and there is. But first, for the “Victory Lap” track: Eve blows Berg away in lyrics, naturally, but I like Collie Buddz on the track; he gives it a reggae kind of feel that I like. After the song ends, wait like 30 seconds and another track pops up, really street orientated, the banger of the album since Berg hasn’t been trying to make any this entire album. As soon as I heard the bonus track, I felt cheated. This song is horrible, I don’t blame the beat either, the beat is a banger, but Berg is really bad over it, so is the other fool on the track, whoever it is. I’m just glad it’s finally over.

(At this point in the review, I had to take some Tylenol)

Bottom Line:
B-Easy warned me about this, but I stubbornly decided to listen to the album anyway thinking I’d give the fairest opinion. Well, now I can fairly say that Yung Berg is probably one of the worst rappers that I have heard in a long time. He’s got 2 songs here that he contributed to (I’m not counting “Sexy Can I” because if you haven’t heard it by now, you never will), and both of them are decent at best; there is nothing on this album that is great. Only two songs on this album are even good! YB’s problem is he spends too much time trying to come up with clever puns and wordplays and trying to reference great rappers and works that they did instead of actually BEING a great rapper, or at least one I don’t need headache medicine to listen to. Berg is not the worst rapper I’ve heard EVER, but he is pretty damn close. When you’re in the rap game, you need to make music; actual music. Only a few people in the game can get away with making meaningless songs and become famous and even have a shot at being called Best Rapper Alive (*cough* Weezy *cough*), but that doesn’t mean that everyone should do it. Berg frequently repeats lines over and over again (me, me, me: we get that me rhymes me already!), ruins perfectly good beats, and is overall an incredibly mediocre rapper. When B-Easy reviewed his EP, he said he hoped someone else would have to review the full-length album. Well, one-year later, Berg’s made an album that is worse than that. I pray for the next person who has to review a Yung Berg that there isn’t a another one. And King Jerm, if I ever volunteer for an album like this again, shoot me.

nappyPicks: “If You Only Knew”, but ONLY if you really want to listen to YB.

I was just listening to some music lately, and then it hit me: who’s gonna be runnin’ this rap shit in 10 years? The big name rappers will have most likely retired for good by then: Jay-Z will be pushing almost 50, and all the real rappers will be in their mid-40s at least. I mean, will this stop them from rhymin’? Probably not, but will the newer generation buy their albums is the question. Weezy will be going on 40, same with T.I., Jeezy, and Kanye, so they will most likely be in the same boat Jay-Z is in right now: highly respected, but not puttin’ it down like they did before.

Soulja Boy said to Ice-T in his video “There’s young niggas eating now.” That’s true, but do any of these niggas have what it takes to take the throne? Let’s see what we got, and who could fill the throne.

Bow Wow: He’s got OK rhymes, but he really needs to grow up. He’s probably the only rapper right now I could see who could make a serious attempt at being king. I could see Bow Wow maturing and taking the rap game to another level, but he’ll have to work on those rhymes. I doubt that he’ll become amazingly lyrical, but he’ll be enough to pass.

Soulja Boy: I really just put him on the list for shits and giggles. He’ll have to come up one dance every single time he makes an album if he wants to be successful his entire career, and I’m sure he’ll run out of ideas soon, and unless ABC rhymes become what the rap game is about(and if is, I’ll start listening to country), then I don’t see a long career for Soulja Boy. He’ll make his money before then, though.

Lil’ Mama: Yeah I know it says King of Hip-Hop, but we’ve got some female MC’s out there too. Lil’ Mama’s got some serious skills, she could actually claim this spot in my opinion. If so, that woul’d be very awesome for all the ladies out there in the game; we’d probably get a lot more female MC’s too, so maybe this is what we need in the future. It might happen too.

Romeo: He’s not bad, but to be honest, I’m not sure if he’s as popular as Bow Wow. I mean, he killed Bow Wow on “U Can’t Shine Like Me” and I think he’s decent, but he’s only got one album out where he’s a teenager. All the other one’s are when he was young. But if he actually gets into the rap game, we could see a huge beef form between Bow Wow and Romeo over the crown a la Tupac and Biggie, only much, MUCH less hardcore.

Yung Berg … I only put him up because he’s young enough to be a contender, but after what he said recently, I’m going to have to say HELL NO!

Hurricane Chris: Yeah, same deal with Soulja Boy, except he’ll have to come up with a new saying every single time he drops an album. That’s technically not as hard as making up a new dance, but his debut album hasn’t even gone Gold yet, so nah.

V.I.C.: He’s that new rapper who released that song “Get Silly” with Soulja Boy. Yeah. NEXT.

Tyga: Ok, from what I’ve heard, Tyga is not very good. Not at all. But hey, things can change? Right?? Maybe once Tyga is actually DOING all the things he talks about in his songs and is smart enough not to release an album the same day as Weezy, he’ll be successful. But I doubt he’ll ever be considered for the top spot.

Arab: Just like Yung Berg, I only put him up because he’s young enough. In my opinion, every person on this list has a much better chance of being king than Arab: the nigga hasn’t even made an album yet! When he rhymed “get this money” with “Doo-doo head dummy” on “Yahhh!”, I was done with him. I could see him being Soulja’s boy’s Bitch/Hype Man, Just like Notorious and Diddy, but with the talent cranked way down for both of them.

Conclusion: Right now, I’m praying to god that a decent MC that’s under 18 comes into the game, because if they don’t, the future looks pretty ugly. I mean, some dudes on that list could take it, but it’ll be sad what Hip-Hop will be like without dudes who can put shit down. Let’s hope most of these guys go to the dollar store to buy a pen and paper soon.

My top three picks:

1. Bow Wow and Romeo(Tie: Romeo is better, but Bow Wow is more popular)
3. Lil’ Mama

Honorable Mention: Soulja Boy, if he can keep the dances fresh.

In this weekly post I will just rant and rave about what I see going on in Hip-Hop and will decide whether Hip Hop is alive or dead for the current week. Enjoy.

It’s funny what seven days can change. Last week the buzz was still surrounding Lil’ Dwayne Carter and his 1 million plus sales week. Hip-Hop was alive and well. Hell, even Plies had came in at a decent number 2. Yes Plies*. Jay-Z’s whole show from across the pond showed up online and 50 Cent and his goons for hire, Yayo, and Banks, were running around creating beef with anybody within 10 feet of them to try and get some buzz for their new “flop” album. Surely they wouldn’t sell a million but going gold the first week out is nothing to sneeze at.

Well ah-choo niggas. AH-CHOO!

Weezy F. Baby fell another 25% in record sales although we can expect him to jump back up a few notches after the interview with nappyafro. We like to call it the nappyafro bump. Anyway, then we have the debacle of the G-Unit album**. They barely cleared a hundred grand and everybody knows 50 is famous for buying at least 50,000 copies of any CD he drops. Scary right? There is considerable buzz about Universal being behind Wayne’s high record sales. Then we have some guy named Yung Berg…is it Yung Berg or Bird or is it Burger? I don’t know. Anyway y’all know who I’m talking about, saying the most ignorant things he could possibly think of out of his mouth. The question is why was there even a camera near this dude for us to see and hear it? Go play on the monkey bars or something.

If you didn’t think what he said was a big deal then just imagine my man Bill O’Reilly had said it. Puts everything in a different perspective now doesn’t it?

Look people, with Yung Burger and Teddy Riley’s son, and all the G-Unit stuff infiltrated the internet this past week I have decided to trash my computer.

Where’s the excitement? Where’s the buzz? Jay can you just announce you’re dropping another album? I’m not even all that excited about the Nas release although I’m hoping for good things. There’s the new song by Big Boi and MJB so maybe he can help save the cause next week.

But for this week my verdict is HIP HOP IS DEAD. Thanks a lot 50 and Berger.

* What is a Bust it Baby anyway??????
** We are tired of your schtick 50. Just make a good album.

Jump in the pool exactly like you are.’–And you don’t come looking better wet than you were before you got in the pool then that’s not a good look.
Wow! YB has really taken it there! How are you going to alienate your female fan base like that? So when these “dark butts” stop supporting you, I hope you have enough light and damn near white fans to keep your Transformer chain out the pawn shop!

I won’t lie to you; I really wasn’t looking forward to this review. If any one out there can remember, I already said a little about what I think of Young Berg’s music (We Want Easy: 7-16-07). But you know what? I gotta pushed the hating aside and go into this with new eyes. Even though I didn’t feel his first single “Sexy Lady”, Yung Berg was signed to DMX’s now defunct Bloodlines Records. He’s from Chicago which is not a bad thing these days since the city has been putting out fairly good rappers in the last few years. Besides this isn’t a real album review, it’s only an EP (Six tracks to be exact). Due to the single being a big success and to avoid the album from being leaked this teaser was released (for Yung Berg’s real debut Look What You Made Me).

The album of course starts out with “Sexy Lady”. I’ll admit it’s not the worst song I ever heard; but the problem I have is it’s generic feel. What stands out on this track other than the quick Slick Rick sample? Berg is really feeling him self on the track with lines like, “She know her little nigga spit ether”. Really Yung Berg? If you going for that pop rapper thing, be that. Don’t front like you really dropping some lyrical bombs. Berg continues getting at the ladies on “Into It” featuring JFK & Tony Loco. The beat isn’t that bad; it actually reminds me off some laid back stuff I would’ve of heard Q-Tip rap on or something. It’s the subject matter that once again takes the song down. These guys take this “rap about it now, hope you get it later” shit too far. Listening to this song you would think these dudes have been doing world tours for years and making millions. Twista helps matters a little when he appears on “Where Do We Go”. I hate to say it, but I actually recognize this song as the outro from the “Sexy Lady” video. This collaboration isn’t as crazy as it sounds; I hear Yung Berg actually used to rhyme like Twista before this album. The beat sounds amateur but Twista has a good performance out classing Berg in the process. “Almost Famous” might be the best track on an EP of slim pickings. Yea, it’s corny and expected with tales of guns, chicken heads, haters, & making money but I trying to throw this guy a bone. The production and R&B hooks sounds like something you heard a thousand times before though. The obligatory “Sexy Lady” (remix) featuring Jim Jones & Rich Boy is up next. I’ll give them this, at least they actually changed up the beat and made it better than the original. It is what it is; if you like the original you love the remix. I personally can’t co-sign this when Young Berg says, “They call me young 50, beats like Dre, flow like Biggie.” That shit almost fucked up my whole day. Up next is “Painkiller” which is actually a song by R&B singer Nikki Flores that features Yung Berg. Why it’s on here I don’t know but I’m not listening to it.

Bottom Line:
In a rap game that’s already full of ballers, thugs, and players, what’s one more right? Yung Berg didn’t really show any personality besides that. While I’m sure I’ll be reminded that this is an EP; what I heard didn’t make me look forward to his album. Even with the cameos from Twista, Jim Jones, and Rich Boy, listening to this felt like an eternity…and it was only six songs long. I just hope King Jerm or somebody has to review Yung Berg’s full length album, I already did my time.

nappy Picks: “Sexy Lady” (remix)

Download: Yung Berg feat. Junior, Jim Jones, & Rich Boy – “Sexy Lady”(remix)

What’s up people? I’m back like I left something! Naw, I never left really. The site views are climbing and as always, I like to thank everyone who came by to read a word or two. It’s been almost a month since I dropped a real We Want Easy (“Low Album Sales/Hip-Hop On Life Support” doesn’t count), so bare with me if I’m a little rusty. Let’s do this, shall we?

Okay, when Young Berg was planning this video, I think it went like this: “Hey man, let’s do a club scene, get some women in the video rubbing all on me, I can wear a colored grill, gotta wear two chains, maybe I can even rap in front of a luxury car or something, has anybody else did that?” I understand that a lot has been done in music videos but damn people, where’s the creativity? The song and the video are both generic. I’m not even gonna mention the “Young” in Young Berg’s name or that this guy has no personality. “Sigh”, like I’ve said before, welcome to Hip-Hop in the new millennium.

I really don’t have much to say about these shoes. I’m really not into the whole shoe culture, I really just wanted to put this up to find out how many people would actually where these shoes. Slik P already told me they where hot and on the staff, he and King Jerm are the resident shoe fanatics. Me, I don’t know, they look like K-Mart shoes to me.

I saw this a week or so ago and I thought it was weird. I’m still trying to figure out why they put Bush on this mixtape cover.

Superhead’s New Book

Okay, I used to hate on Miss Karrine Steffans, but I ain’t hating no more. Why are these rappers still fucking with this chick? We all read the first book; we know how girl gets down. So if she goes at Lil’ Wayne or Ne-Yo, or who ever in this new book (and reports say she does), they brought this shit on themselves. I know everybody talked about this shit, but I just had to say my piece. Check for Superhead on the cover of the recent King magazine.

The Debate: Ciara vs. Keyshia Cole

Yes, if you saw the results of The Debate: Ciara vs. Keyshia Cole, you’ll see that your boy B-Easy won. I appreciate the ones who voted for my choice. For the ones who didn’t; What were you thinking? Naw, I’m just kidding. King Jerm, you 0-3, get your debate skills up son.

Damn, 50 Cent is trying real hard to build a buzz for his forthcoming album Curtis. What’s this like, his 3rd video for an album not yet released? The sad thing is that I actually like this video and song a lot. I know, I know, I just talked about Young Berg’s generic ass video, but this here is a straight banger. I don’t know if any of you remember, but this same thing happened to me once before (Fat Joe feat. Lil’ Wayne – “Make It Rain”). I know I’m supposed to hate it, I just can’t. Until, you catch me saying the same thing about Hurricane Chris’ “A Bay Bay”, I think I’m good.
