We all knew the end was coming soon for Little Brother when Phonte announced that Leftback would be their final album. But here’s proof for those that didn’t believe it. The track sounds as if it would actually end the album as Little Brother (With producer Khrysis) get ready to put a bow on a good Hip-Hop career. Leftback drops April 20th.

You have to dig in the crates quite a ways back to find out when skits became big on Hip-Hop albums. If I remember it right, I THINK it was De La Soul that pretty much escorted this practice into regular status in Hip-Hop. On some albums, it’s a major player and adds to the quality and on other albums, it’s a part of the reason the FFWD button is damn near naked. Today, let’s talk about classic skits in Hip-Hop and those who have you looking forward to the skits almost as much as the albums (at least the ones that I’ve heard, so don’t come in here talking about MC Local Leonard on his Still Local 6: The Takeover Album.)

5. Lauryn Hill

Stand-Out: Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill
As one of my top 5 albums of all time, the interludes on this album add to the classic nature of Ms. Hill’s first album. The classroom setting and voice of the children set the tone as Lauryn grows up on this album in front of our eyes.

4. Little Brother

Stand-Outs: “Diary of a Mad Black Daddy”, “5th and Fashion” (Minstrel Show); “Don’t Trust Em”, “The Singing Bums”; (Separate But Equal), “Roy Lee Producer Extraordinaire” (The Listening)
I think LB could be writers or have their own Skit show on TV because these cats are fools man. One of my favorites is 5th and Fashion that patterns itself after one of those commercials for the Big Big Expo Sale down at your local Convention Center or dome.

3. Kanye West

Stand-Outs: (Any skit from The College Dropout & Late Registration)
Ye is one of the best at using skits to complete his album. From the (fake ) Bernie Mac intro to Broke Phi Broke, Ye has proved to be one of the purest and most complete fusions of Hip-Hop and creativity to date. Proven to be more than just filler, this man is serious about his music.

2. Bad Boy Records

Stand-Outs: Mase – Harlem World, The Notorious B.I.G. – Life After Death
The skits featuring the Mad Rapper were so successful, they spawned an album. The shit was comic genius and would do even better in today’s climate of ringtone rap and one hit wonders. Not to mention my personal number one skit of all time before “Nasty Boy” on Biggies album kept me teary each time I heard it.

1. Dr. Dre – Aftermath / Death Row Records

Stand-Outs: “The $20 Sack Pyramid” (The Chronic), “Steve Berman” (The Marshall Mathers LP)
The skits with Steve Berman, Paul Rosenberg, and Insane Clown Posse on Em’s CD’s are too funny for words. When you add in $20 Sack Pyramid, the classic Deez Nuts, and the lead in skits on Doggystyle, I don’t know that any one producer is better at this than Dr. Dre.

Yeah, it’s me again. I think it’s time for me to take a long retirement from Song of the Week; it’s really not what I initially thought it was (It seems I’m picking a lot of new stuff lately). Don’t worry, it’s a great chance that the pick next week will be something dusty and good (Unless Jay-Z drops something with Andre 3000 on the hook). Also, it’s like five other staff members, so there’s that too. Now, let’s see what I got (All links courtesy of Tha Carter Cartel and my lazy link jacking):

Download: Joe Budden feat. Joell Ortiz, Nino Bless, Crooked I, & Royce Da 5′9″ – “Slaughterhouse”

What? I see you punks talking about us on the message boards. For some reason, people seems to think we’re all mainstream on this site. That couldn’t be farther from the truth (I personally have been bumping Royce’s The Bar Exam 2 & The Foreign Exchange’s Leave It All Behind). Well, when this song came out the other day, I’m sure the internet Hip-Hop fan boys were all busting in their pants. One of the many lines that stands out in the song is from Royce Da 5′9″: “I gotta open window flow/I air shit out/In the D they used to call Mayor Royce/Now they call me Clay Davis/Guess why?/Shhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttt!/Cause when it come to them words you know I wear shit out.” Fans of The Wire rejoice. Since Joe Budden’s Padded Room was pushed back to Feb. 2009, I guess having Halfway House won’t be bad at all.

Download: Akon feat. Lil’ Wayne & Young Jeezy – “I’m So Paid (remix)”

No disrespect to Akon, but for some reason I’m not excited about his new album Freedom (Could T-Pain have jumped him in terms of popularity already?). Well, he pulls out the big guns for this one and supposedly a music video is close behind. The actual song is not bad at all; just a little predictable: Jeezy mentions Michael Phelps, Weezy uses the vocoder, and Akon talks about money. I guess we’ll see how Freedom fairs when it drops on Nov. 25th.

Download: Little Brother – “Passion Flower”

Last week we featured a Little Brother song from Jake One’s White Van Music; this week we give you another LB joint. Here’s a 9th Wonder produced track that will be featured the re-released and DJ Drama free version of Separate But Equal (Scheduled to drop on Nov. 4th). It feels like at this point, this shit is too easy for Phonte; all that dude needs is a bigger arena.

Before we began, let’s be clear about it; I already reviewed this album last year. Yep, Little Brother released this Mick Boogie powered mixtape last year and I gave it 3 Stars (Back before we stopped reviewing mixtapes). Matter of fact, go ahead and check out the original review first. Go ahead, I’ll wait…okay you back? Good. The only thing I’m covering today is the new tracks added for the official release of And Justus For All. After releasing 3 great albums, I don’t think this “official” mixtape will actually get them the notice they deserve. But, they still make good music though. Let’s check out the new material for the album.

Too Late For Us
Featuring Tiye Phoenix; Produced by DJ Spinna
After you hear the first new song of the album, you know right away that it’s not a throw away track. Phonte does some more moonlighting by singing on the hook and the song turns out to be a great duet about lost loves. Tiye Phoenix does a good job of singing/rapping while countering Phonte. The beat is laid back and fits the mood. Pooh doesn’t show up for this track but I’m sure he’ll show up later.

Cool As Fan
Produced by Khrysis
Speak of the devil. Big Pooh starts off this track and starts it off right. Phonte comes next and kills it; “Niggas talking major/But they got no flavor like white folk’s Kool-Aid”. No hook, just two verses. The song clocks in at about 2 ½ minutes, but it’s straight Hip-Hop.

Lose It
Featuring Jozeemo; Produced by Khrysis
It’s nappyafro’s favorite rapper! What up Jozeemo? Naw for real, I can’t really say anything bad about the dude. Besides the bias bullshit; he does good on the first verse; “Wanna dive off the stage/But I weigh 250/I ain’t fucking up my threads/Cause I’m way too jiggy”. The song deals with the feeling they get when they perform on stage. The beat is kinda redundant after a while; but it works.

Stylin’
Featuring Oh No; Produced by Khrysis
Khrysis surprised me and changed up with this electronic themed track and surprisingly the track works (I see dudes freestyling on this one all day). This track has Rapper Big Pooh and Oh No going on about what happens to the people around you when you start getting a little fame and wealth. I never really checked for Oh No liked that, but his verse wasn’t bad at all.

Time Of Your Life
Featuring Carlitta Durand; Produced by Designated Hitters
This is not really a new track per se. It was on last year’s GetBack (Which we gave a 4.5 Stars). It’s still a great song though (If you got that album, pull it back out and listen to it).

Black Light Special
Produced by 9th Wonder
It’s funny, the only new song on the album that was produced by 9th Wonder and I really didn’t like it. It’s not bad; it just could have been better. Pooh (Who goes on this one solo) tries to work with the beat but something just doesn’t feel right.

Bottom Line:
Even if you downloaded the free version of And Justus For All, you still might wanna pick up the official version; the songs are mastered, DJ free, and sound clearer. Plus the new songs adds something to the album. If you never heard this album, it’s not a bad addition to any Hip-Hop collection. Don’t get me wrong, some songs like Phonte’s “Last Day” are not here and are sorely missed. But the new songs compensate for that and are at least worth an extra ½ of a Star Rating. In recent interviews with Little Brother, it was hinted that this might be the last “official” album from Little Brother. If this is true, fans might wanna show some love to a truly slept on Hip-Hop group. (*Rating for this review is based on the previous review also)

I’ve been gone for a minute but I’m back, and it’s time to pick up where I left off. People have been asking about Rewind Reviews and when another one was going to be done. Well the wait is over and it’s just in time for a fresh batch. “Just let this motherfucker come on, and be fresh.” These are the initial words heard on this album at its start. These words not only describe Cloud 9: The 3 Day High, but the state of Hip-Hop music as it currently stands. The word “fresh” by definition is “not previously known or used; new or different”. Though relatively an unknown artist to those outside of New York, fresh is something that Skyzoo stands by and represents to the fullest. Collaborating with one of the best producers of this generation in 9th Wonder, Skyzoo looks to bring that freshness to the rap game and attract some new listeners and supporters along the way.

Bare Witness
Produced by 9th Wonder
What a perfect way to start off an album as displayed here on the first track. The beat produced by 9th Wonder has a “brand new” or “awakening” feel to it, and it blends very nicely with the lyrics from Skyzoo as he commands the listening audience to pay attention to one of the nicest upcoming artist in the rap game while stating his views on the game’s current status.

Way To Go
Produced by 9th Wonder
This next track literally picks up right where the previous track left off at, with an inspirational and stirring sounding beat from 9th Wonder. Skyzoo does his thing on this track with the lyrics and sounds extremely comfortable over 9th’s soulful sampled production. Sky speaks nothing but truth on this track in telling how these emcees and artists have a long way to go to catch up to the fresh sound he and 9th are providing with this album. This was a great selection for the single off the project. Check out of the music video on YouTube if you get a chance, it’s some nice work.

A Day In The Life
Produced by 9th Wonder
This has to be one of the most smooth, laid-back sounding beats from 9th Wonder that I have ever heard. The feel of this track perfectly complements Skyzoo’s flow and delivery, as well as his swagger, which is pretty much undeniable. As a resident of Brooklyn, his swagger is similar to that of Jay-Z; and what would you expect in being from the same borough? Skyzoo is superb in his lyrics in describing a day in his life and everything it’s comprised of.

Stop Fooling Yourself
Produced by 9th Wonder
I have to admit that when I first purchased this album, I used to skip over this track immediately and not even listen to it. But after I gave it a chance I found it to be a very good track, if not one of the best on the project. 9th supply a dark sounding beat on this track that fits well with Skyzoo’s lyrics and the message he’s saying within his rhymes. I think this is a track that most people can relate to, especially those who claim to be on their grind in the streets doing what they can to survive whether it’s hustling drugs or living the crime life. This song is best listened to when really focusing on what Skyzoo is saying. A lot of people in life need to “stop fooling themselves”.

Come Back
Produced by 9th Wonder
Usually Hip-Hop artists take the corny/cheesy route when it comes to making songs for the ladies or when dealing with relationships, but not Skyzoo. He does a fantastic job of describing his tales with various females in his life and not wanting to commit to one girl until he’s sure she is the one. This song is straight honest and is something that every girl should understand if a guy were to ever explain it to her the way Skyzoo does on this track. He wants to explore his options with other girls, and if his current girl is “the one” then he’ll come back to her in the end. Who could be mad at that?

I’m On It
Produced by 9th Wonder
After a gloomy sounding track, 9th comes back on the next track with a livelier sounding beat. This song is the B-Side of the album single “Way To Go”, and it is something that would certainly fit in the club to dance to. That’s the best part about a track like this from the type of artist that Skyzoo is. He’s able to make a “club” sounding track without having to jeopardize his lyrics or making them sound commercial. It’s something that more artists should try once and a while, and stop selling themselves out for a hit single. Halfway through the album and Sky hasn’t disappointed at all on any track so far.

The Bodega
Produced by 9th Wonder
This song was written from a New York state of mind as you can tell from the song’s title. When you hear or think about bodegas, you automatically think of New York especially if you’re from there or have been there enough times. In sticking with his motto of “what he performs in the booth is strictly truth”, Skyzoo speaks about what he knows in telling about his experience around the NYC bodegas. 9th Wonder supplies a nice beat for this track, but after a while it starts to become boring and repetitive. Nice insertion of a scene from Paid In Full for the intro of the track.

You & Me
Produced by 9th Wonder
Seeing how he took an alternate route on the song “Come Back”, Skyzoo decides to use the normal method on this track in talking about his relationship with a girl. Even though he used the normal method on this track, there are major differences in this track and how other artists’ use it that makes this song that much better. A very nice soulful track from 9th Wonder is one reason why this song is works better and is more enjoyable. Another reason is Sky’s lyrics in how he doesn’t go the corny route, but instead rhymes with truth and conviction.

Live & Direct
Produced by 9th Wonder
On this track 9th switches up things in terms of production adding some horns to the beat. This works effectively, but the short sample that he uses becomes very repetitive and annoying after a while of listening to it. The beat’s somewhat lackluster production makes it kind of difficult to focus on Skyzoo’s lyrics and what he’s saying. This would probably be one of my least favorite tracks on the entire album, and it feels like it could have been done much better.

The Spirit
Produced by 9th Wonder
A somewhat spiritual influenced track by Skyzoo and 9th is heard on this next track. 9th supplys a beat to fit the mood that Skyzoo is trying to portray, but it’s not his best work and just ends up being average production. Skyzoo delivers some nice lyrics, and confident ones if I might say with lines like this: Sky set fire to reps/Flow’ll make you believe, when B.I.G. died I’d quiet his breaths, young’n/My new name is The Flower, cause flow wise no one can see me besides Hova, quote that

Extreme Measures
Produced by 9th Wonder
Skyzoo goes for speaking the truth on this track in displaying his storytelling ability. 9th delivers an average sounding beat on this track that gets repetitive after a while of listening to it. It’s not a good look that these last 3 beats by 9th have only been average and could have been much better. Skyzoo does what he’s supposed to on this track and spits a nice story that’s kind of hard to follow at times, but it works.

Mirror
Produced by 9th Wonder
I ain’t go lie, even though the production from 9th on this track seems pretty simple, I’m feeling the beat the most out of almost any other track on the album. Skyzoo does the beat justice with the lyrics he delivers about all of these copycat emcees in the game and how a lot of them mirror his style along with other established artists in the genre. The hook on this track is kind of corny, but it’s sufficient for what it’s worth. This was a nice way to end of the album and it brings it to a close in good fashion, leaving you waiting for the next project from the two.

Bottom Line:
After 12 tracks from the collaborative effort of Skyzoo & 9th Wonder, it’s safe to say that they brought some much-needed freshness to the rap game and industry in general. You will find this album to be a “breath of fresh air” in a heavily polluted industry similar to recent albums like The Bake Sale (The Cool Kids) and The In Crowd (Kidz In The Hall). The only difference between this album and those projects is that this album carries are more East Coast feel with Skyzoo being a Brooklyn native, which those other two album have a more “Hip-Hop/80’s/Nostaglia” feel to it. Seeing as how Skyzoo & 9th Wonder put this project together in a total of 3 days hence the album’s title The 3 Day High, they have done better than what most artists fail to do 6 months or years in producing an album. Skyzoo worked magic over some of 9th’s leftover/rejected beats from other artists he’s worked with like Little Brother, Jay-Z, Destiny’s Child, etc. Listeners can’t go wrong in purchasing a copy of this album, whether it’s on CD or from iTunes (which I did). You will ultimately be delivered with some good Hip-Hop music and a much-needed change in pace from a lot of what’s dominating the game nowadays. Skyzoo is one of the talented upcoming rappers in the game that’s really keeping it real and truthfully, so support him now and don’t be one of the many who decides to jump on the bandwagon once he starts to see some success in the industry.

The success of Will Smith and LL Cool J along with others led to the obliteration of the lines between entertainment and sports industries. Outside of breaking into sports, the others have become highways to the other making the jump from actor to rapper, or vice versa, quite commonplace. Even more so, it makes it harder to take most of those attempts seriously.

Insert Aubrey Drake Graham. He is known as Jimmy Brooks to those that watch Degrassi: The Next Generation, however; his rapper hook is Drake. Degrassi and Hip-Hop? Surely Saule Wright has lost his mind.

You may be right about me losing my mind, but this is not evidence of that. This cd has been on constant play since I copped it. Still not convinced? Okay, let me give you some of the names of the people on his Comeback Season mixtape. Ready? Brace yourself…Trey Songz, Little Brother, Dwele, Kardinal Offishall, Rich Boy, Clipse, Robin Thicke, and Lil’ Wayne. Did they all cut new verses just for his album? Maybe not, but they all work well to comprise one of the best albums you’ve never heard. Check out his MySpace HERE to make a purchase (Google search for you pirates). Make sure you turn your headphones up when checking out this Toronto artist. You won’t be sorry at all.

Since 1987, Pete Rock has steadily carved his place in Hip-Hop and collected legions fans along the way. First as one half of a duo with CL Smooth (“T.R.O.Y.”), then as a producer of other artists as well (Nas’ “The World Is Yours”). Well, it’s 2008 and Pete Rock is still grindin’ as he releases his 6th solo album in 10 years, NY’s Finest. As you can tell by the name, the album features fellow New Yorkians and has Pete Rock producing most of the album as well as rapping. Let’s see what the Soul Brother cooks up this time.

1. Pete Intro
Produced by Pete Rock
This is a short intro that sets up the tone of the album complete with clips from movies and such. This is continued through the album and precedes and ends each track. Nice touch; increases the album’s cohesiveness.

2. We Roll
Featuring Jim Jones & Max B; Produced by Pete Rock
The album officially starts of with Jimmy Jones and Max B. Now, if you read my unfavorable Jim Jones review last week (Harlem’s American Gangster), you probably think I won’t like this song either. Well, you’re wrong. It always surprises me how well Jim Jones and Pete Rock sound together (Remember “G’s Up”?). All in all, it’s a good song that combines Jim Jones and Max B usual rhymes over a well produced smoothed out Pete Rock track.

3. Til I Retire
Produced by Pete Rock
Pete goes solo on this one and it uses samples of Run DMC’s “King Of Rock”. Even though Pete Rock isn’t known much for his lyrics, he does his thing here with lines like “More bars than Alcatraz, just call me The Rock”. It’s basically talking about various things like his place in music and how he’s not going anywhere. Good song.

4. 914
Featuring Styles P & Sheek Louch; Produced by Pete Rock
It gets gutta when Pete Rock and D-Block get together on this one. This track has an old school 90’s feel but that not a bad thing here. This is basically a song reppin’ 914 (New York’s area code). If you a D-Block fan, don’t worry they didn’t hold back on the gangster talk here

5. Questions
Featuring Royal Flush; Produced by Pete Rock
Damn, I ain’t heard from Royal Flush since like 1995 when he had that song “Iced Out Medallions”. Well he’s back and still doing his thing. He even goes into talking about his divorce and how he had to “get rid of that bitch”. Along with the track, he sounds like he did back in ‘95, so I can’t hate on that. It’s an all right track.

6. Best Believe
Featuring Redman & LD; Produced by Pete Rock
Redman jumps on the track like always. Doesn’t seem like Redman flow is always unswerving? The hook, done by Pete Rock, is kinda lazy though. I never really heard of LD but he and Pete Rock’s verses don’t sound too bad here. The beat is okay, not great, but okay.

7. Ready Fe War
Featuring Chip Fu & Rene; Produced by Pete Rock
This is basically a Reggae song. For those that don’t know, Chip Fu is from the group Fu-Schnickens and Rene is from the R&B group Zhane. Don’t get it twisted, Chip Fu is not rapping like he was with Shaq (“What’s Up Doc?”). I thought dude was Maxey Priest. It’s alright; more Reggae than Hip-Hop though.

8. Don’t Be Mad
Produced by Green Lantern
This is the only track on the album not produced by Pete Rock. Green Lantern provides a track that sounds…just like Pete Rock. The beat isn’t bad but this song is slightly brought down by Pete Rock. I mean he’s good sometimes (like on the previous “Til I Retire”), but he’ still not a lyricist.

9. Bring Y’all Back
Featuring Little Brother & Joe Scudda; Produced by Pete Rock
Whoa. This beat on this one is a banger. Little Brother with help from Joe Scudda do damage here. The funny thing is, since Pete and 9th Wonder’s beats sometime sound similar, the track reminds me of stuff Little Brother did before they became a duo.

10. The Best Secret
Featuring Lord of the Underground; Produced by Pete Rock
The parade of 90’s New York rappers continues as Lord of the Underground comes through. Did you know that Lords of the Underground came out last year? Me neither. They unexpectedly do a good job here. They sound inspired and ride the Pete Rock piano laced track like youngsters.

11. That’s What I Am Talking About
Featuring Rell; Produced by Pete Rock
I guess this is the closest you’re gonna get to a club record on this album. The song features ex Roc-A-Fella artists Rell doing the hook. The beat is the usual smooth Pete Rock style. It’s a nice laid back sound.

12. The PJ’s
Featuring Raekwon & Masta Killa; Produced by Pete Rock
Is it me, or did after the buzz of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II died, Raekwon fell off a little? He sometimes just goes on and on about nothing. Well, Pete Rock provides a sufficient track but it kinda sounds boring after Rae and Killa jump on. Kinda sad to see what Wu Tang has become.

13. Made Man
Featuring Tarrey Torae; Produced by Pete Rock
On this track Pete Rock reps NY hard on this track with lines like, “I rep New York like I play for the Knicks”. He once goes solo on the rap side with Tarrey Torae singing the hooks and ad-libs. The beat get’s kinda redundant but it’s serviceable.

14. Let’s Go
Featuring Doo Wop; Produced by Pete Rock
Damn, the pace picks up real fast when it gets to this track; it woke my ass up. Is this DJ Doo Wop? If so, he ain’t bad on the mic at all. The song is about a minute and a half so it’s short but to the point. There are talks about Pete Rock and Doo Wop doing an album together under the name Tango & Cash. Now, I’m thinking it might be worth a listen.

15. Comprehend
Featuring Papoose; Produced by Pete Rock
Papoose comes through for the last track on the album. Pete Rock does well to make a track that sounds good under Papoose’s voice. The one problem I have with this track is a line Papoose says at the beginning; “When that storm hit the South in New Orleans up, me and Kanye the only MC’s who spoke up”. Damn, David Banner, Mos Def, and other didn’t? Other than that, it’s an alright way to end the album.

Bottom Line:
Pete Rock is mostly consistent when it comes to his beats; on this album it mostly the same. The sound of the album itself is unified and that says a lot in today’s market of albums full of solitary singles. Although there are some slip ups and the wheel doesn’t get reinvented, it’s still just Hip-Hop baby and Pete Rock brings it.

nappy Picks: “We Roll”, “Bring Y’all Back” & “Let’s Go”
