Rick Ross is the latest rapper to try his hand at being an executive with the release of his group Triple C’s debut album Custom Cars & Cycles. The group consists of Ross, Gunplay, Torch, and Young Breed. Don’t think that these were some rappers that just got put on; they have been down with Ross from the beginning. Now it’s their turn to bring the country deeper into Miami, past South Beach, past all the beaches, and straight to Carol City. Ross has been on a roll this year, now he has to show that he really is a Boss and can manage a team. Let’s check it out.

Custom Cars & Clips

The album starts off with Ricky GOING IN over some nice production. Say what you want to about Ross, but the dude has that IT factor about him. The rest of the group made a good impression on me on the first song. There wasn’t any doubt that Ross & Co. wasn’t going to come out the gate stumbling.

White Sand
Produced by DJ Speedy
The chopped beat has me OPEN over here! Of course Ross starts it off to set the tone, the group follows him up. When Ross is out the song, it seems like they are doing their best NOT to lose the lead. The production is so tight on this one; I think that made up for the average lyrics from the squad.

Break It Down
Featuring Bun B; Produced by Best Kept Secret & Nasty Kutt
Once again the crew gets dealt some nice production and they put in some nice work on the song. Of course the stand out verses belonged to Ross and Bun. Ross is doing a good job carrying the team so far.

Go
Featuring Birdman; Produced by Schife & OhZee
Four songs in a row with nice production is making this album very listenable. Ross again sets the tone for the song, I can’t complain, it has been working, STICK WITH IT. This is the first single from the album and this isn’t a bad one to come out the gate with.

We Getting’ It
Produced by Schife & OhZee
All of the momentum of the album came to a standstill on this track. This song didn’t fit in with the flow of the first four songs. The hook on the song is a problem, the production could have been better, and since the production wasn’t that good, some flaws got exposed with the group. Ross couldn’t save this one.

Trick’n Off
Featuring Gucci Mane; Produced by Drumma Boy
The album swings back on track with an appearance of one of the hottest dudes in the street…GUCCI! You can tell Ross dumbed his lyrics down for Gucci. Triple C’s sound more comfortable rapping on these topics. HOT SONG.

Throw It In The Sky
Produced by The Olympicks
Ross sets the tone again on the track over some pretty good production provided by The Olympicks. This would do some good spins in the club because of the hook and the topic. I like the feel of this one.

Erryday
Featuring Young Jeezy & JW; Produced by Schife & OhZee
Schife and OhZee bounce back after their first slip up to release a BANGER. When Triple C’s get good production, it disguises the fact that they might not be the best MC’s out there, but they do better when they stay in their lane.

Customized

This is one of those songs that sound so FLORIDA that it’s screaming on the production. I’m on the fence with this song. Half of me likes it, and half of me hates it. The song just doesn’t do enough to win me over.

Gangster Shit
Featuring Game; Produced by Rich Harrison
Game lends a hand on this track and he does what he usually does, but this time he went first and Ross batted clean up on this track. The production does sound like some gangster shit. This song has some good moments, but it’s obvious that this is a one man team.

Finer Things
Featuring Masspike Miles; Produced by The Olympicks
This sounds like your typical Ross track, only problem is that everyone isn’t on Ross’ level. The crew took the Boss’s lead and did enough to keep the listener entertained after Ricky’s verse. The Olympicks did their best J.U.S.T.I.C.E League cover on the production. No diss just noticed.

Chick’n Talk’n
Featuring Mack 10 & Warren G; Produced by The Olympicks & The Dream Team
Don’t adjust your eyes, yes Mack 10 and Warren G are still rapping. This song reminded me why I never listened to Mack…I hate his delivery. What were they thinking with this collab? FAIL.

Diamonds & Maybach Pt. 2
Featuring Suede Royale; Produced by Bink!
Ross is always good for a nice smooth one for you to ride clean to. I can’t even get mad at Ross on this one. Yeah, it’s long (PAUSE), but it’s so smooth that you have to let it ride out. I really like the hook on this one. HOT.

Hustla
Featuring Masspike Miles; Produced by DJ Khalil
They change up and let Gunplay open up on this one and to my surprise he sets it off for the crew. Is this Lloyd on the hook? Sure does sound like him. The production on this one is pretty good, and the Cartel did some good work on this one.

Yams Pt. 2
Featuring Yo Gotti; Produced by Drumma Boy & Zaytoven
“Grandma Kitchen/cooking yams/same pot/she use for the yams”. I guess you know where this one is going. Yo Gotti has become one of the more popular dudes in the streets. If you like dope boy lyrics, this will be one that you jam EVERYDAY. If you are tired of the drug rap…skip this one. I like drug rap when it is executed well, and they did just that on this one.

Bottom Line:
Ross and Triple C’s had a respectable debut album. It was evident that Ross had to be on every track and on most of those tracks, he carried them. Not like his shoulders were not strong enough to do it, but he did get help from the supporting cast, had some nice features, and got a big help from the production. The album will not push a ton of units because it is still being marketed towards the streets. We all know the “streets” don’t buy albums, and as long as that is your targeted audience…you will not do numbers.

When the Hip-Hop world thinks of Olubowale Victor Folarin, aka Wale, the first thing that may come to mind is DC. And then maybe Maryland and Virginia. And then Go-Go music. Yep, Wale has been waving the DMV flag hard ever since he broke though in 2006 with the local hit “Dig Dug (Shake It)”. Now after releasing buzz singles (“Back On The Go-Go” & “Nike Boots”) critically acclaimed mixtapes (The Mixtape About Nothing, 100 Miles & Running, & Back to the Feature), getting numerous magazine co-signs (Named one of the XXL’s “The 10 Freshmen”; cover of URB), and multiple push backs, Wale’s debut album, Attention Deficit, is finally here. But the question still remains: Is this album worth your attention?

1. Triumph

Backed my announcing horns, the first track off this album proves to be a fitting opening for Wale. He spits boastful rhymes as well as his realizations of a new kid on the block; “I ask Mr. West for a little bit of help/Realize us new niggas got to get it ourselves/…And the only thing I fear is Iovine’s shelf”. Good start.

2. Mama Told Me
Produced by Best Kept Secret
The beat on this track is what I honestly expected on this album; it’s still go-go flavored but updated (Plus it’s well produced). I’m feeling the hook and the beat but for some reason around the 2nd verse I starting to loose interest. Wale rhymes okay, just nothing to hold the attention here like it’s needed on this beat. Hey, it could be that I already heard this beat before. It was used for Birdman & Rick Ross’ “Shittin’ On Them” featuring Busta Rhymes. And honestly they did a better job on it too (Yeah, I said it). Wale’s version is still one to check for though.

3. Mirrors
Featuring Bun B; Produced by Mark Ronson
Wale grabs the surviving member of UGK to ride shotgun here. Wale shows versatility and adopts a stutter flow to explain his point; “M-m-m-mirror, tell me I’m the realest/Since all these other nigga g-g-got gimmicks and l-l-lyrics/It’s all gun busting and such a lack of the subject…” Over a mellow and guitar heavy beat, Bun B makes a good showing and Wale holds his own against with certified vet. The back and forth hook was a nice touch too.

4. Pretty Girls
Featuring Gucci Mane & Weensey; Produced by Best Kept Secret
Like I mentioned previously on “Mama Told Me”, I think Wale maybe at his best when he goes back to his Go-Go roots. From the Weensey chorus to the crown interaction towards the end (“Ugly girls be quiet. Pretty girls clap like this.”), this song is a surefire hit. Then again, I basically speaking on the first version released on internet without the Gucci Mane verse. I understand why he was added to bring buzz but did Gucci really add anything to the track? Besides that, “Pretty Girls” was a good pick for the album’s third single.

5. Award Tour
Featuring Jazmine Sullivan; Produced by Cool & Dre
This is the song that further sparked my interest in this album. If you on a plane going to another city/state/country; how is this not your theme music? The piano laced beat by Cool & Dre does the trick as Wale gives “definition of a jet setter” and Jazmine (Proving once again that she is a force on the rap hooks) kills it with the hook and adlibs. If you haven’t checked for this one, get from under that rock and do so right now. Side note: It seems like this song was slightly rearranged for the album.

6. Let It Loose
Featuring Pharrell; Produced by The Neptunes
When I saw this song on the tracklist, I was eager to see what The Neptunes and Wale could come up with. Then I listened to it and I remembered that The Neptunes hasn’t been the Neptunes in a while. Maybe it’s just me but it’s just what I expected. Maybe I need more time with but as of now I’ll pass.

7. 90210
Produced by Mark Ronson
I’ll give it to Wale, he definitely shows he can mix up the subject matter; here he tells a story of girls lost in the city of Beverly Hills (90210). I’m surely not the demographic he’s going for but that not to say it’s a bad thing as the lyrics are well done; “And she throws up, whatever she eats/She leave the bathroom, with a nose bleed…” The beat is somber and makes you think of a bedtime story, which fits the whole “all that glitters…” theme.

8. Shades
Featuring Chrisette Michele; Produced by Best Kept Secret & JuJu
Speaking of subject matter, Wale jumps on a taboo one and brings Chrisette Michele to go in about the subject of skin prejudice in the Black community; “I never fit in with them light skins/I felt the lighter they was, they better that they life is/So I resented them/And they resented me.” Introspective stuff. Adding to the mood is great production as well as Chrisette on the hook (“From a light skinned sister to a drark skinned brother”) this track shows that Wale isn’t afraid to be vulnerable.

9. Chillin’
Featuring Lady Gaga; Produced by Cool & Dre
For some reason, I never got into this song. I understand it’s purpose, a radio friendly crossover single, but it’s still not my cup of tea. Funny thing is if this song had came out much later (Seeing as how Lady GaGa is way more popular now) this track would have much bigger and received much more attention. You should have heard this one by now. Side note: It seems like this song was slightly rearranged for the album also.

10. TV In The Radio
Featuring K’naan; Produced by Dave Sitek
This is another one that I was eager to listen to seeing that the previous collaboration between K’naan and Wale was bananas (“Un Ricka” off Back To The Feature). I wasn’t initially feeling this track but a few more listens it grew on me a bit. It’s not mind blowing but it is unique. That may be due to the awkward beat provided by TV On The Radio’s David Sitek (*Thinks about the song title*) Oh…

11. Contemplate
Produced by Syience
When I first heard this track, like a lot of people I thought it was a Rihanna feature which would have been a great look for Wale. Well, turns out it’s a sample of Rihanna’s “Question Existing” which is not to say that takes anything away from the song. The sample fits the theme of “contemplating” your reasons and actions. In the first verse Wale deals with his girl who wants the fast life and in the second he questions his own quest for glamor; “One day everybody applauding/The next day you is everybody’s target/Why bother?”

12. Diary
Featuring Marsha Ambrosius; Produced by The Sleepwalkers
On this track Wale tries to get a woman to let go of her past troubles with bad relationship and possible open her heart to him; “Every problem that you have with another man I gotta face/Started off on thin ice/I’m still here but I can’t skate”. He switches up the cadence here also to go with the dreamy production. It’s definitely better than what we usually get with rappers theses days dealing with the opposite sex (Even though towards the end he does sound a little pimpish). It’s a good song but I can also see how the beat could get repetitive. Side note: Does Wale have one of the illest lineups of R&B hook women on this album? Yes.

13. Beautiful Bliss
Featuring Melanie Fiona & J.Cole; Produced by DJ Green Lantern & Mark Ronson
Motion picture shit. The beat courtesy of Green Lantern and Mark Ronson truly sets the stage for the feeling of being on top of the world. Wale verses serve the purpose but J. Cole steals the show; “My punchlines like gut checks/I’m raw dog, I’m rough sex/I’m on deck, I’m up next/I’m god bless, I’m success/So fuck stress/You can get the fuck from round me/And if you listening know you wondering where they fuck they found me.” Whoa.

14. Prescription
Produced by Best Kept Secret
The chemistry between Best Kept Secret and Wale proves true again and this song is a fitting exit to Attention Deficit. Wale gives the listener reasons why he is the “Prescription” to listeners sick of the current state of Hip-Hop (“I breathe life in the game/They are Kevorkian”). He also cleverly sprinkles medical terms to illustrate the point. The beat, like the two previous produced by Best Kept Secret, uses go-go elements that blends well with Wale’s style. Good ending

Bottom Line:
Wale delivers a solid album with Attention Deficit and seeing that it’s his official debut, it’s impressive. He shows ranges of subject matter as well as rhyme talent that other rappers don’t show on their 10th album. You may not love every single track but you can respect the distinct voice used. One of my few disappointments with the album as a whole is that I’m not sure if it surpasses his mixtapes like The Mixtape About Nothing or Back To The Feature. Besides the minor drawbacks, Attention Deficit should hold the interest of listeners looking for good Hip-Hop. DMV stand up! Wale’s gotcha. Update: Changed rating. The 4 Stars never felt right.

Don’t get too excited Jigga stans fans, it’s mostly a Keri Hilson R&B track featuring Jay-Z (A quick verse too). That’s not a bad thing but it’s what you’d expect from Timbo and Keri at this point. It’s supposedly gonna be on Tim’s Shock Value 2. Sidenote: Miley Cyrus is gonna on Shock Value 2?

The beat on this one goes hard and the original version of “Crime Wave” quickly made it to my iPod (Check out the music video here). And then 50 had to add Gucci Mane to the remix. I honestly don’t have a problem with Gucci but let’s be real; What does his add to the track? Sidenote: What’s the name of the sample used on “Crime Wave”? The same one was used on Jay-Z’s “Public Service Announcement (9th Wonder Remix)” and on Fabolous’ “This Is Family”. Update: Okay, Gucci’s verse wasn’t that bad.

Of course the big news in Hip-Hop at the moment is Weezy pleading guilty to gun charges in New York and possibly getting a year in prison (NY don’t play about guns. Word to Plaxico & Shyne!). This track are from his soon to be released mixtape No Ceilings (Which is suppose to contain no Auto-Tune or features and drops Oct. 31st). By now by the titles I’m sure you guess what instrumentals he goes over but if this is a return to the Dedication 1-2/Squad Up days…I don’t know if this is that. Either way, shout out the Lil’ Wayne. I’m sure we’ll have enough music to hold us over for 10 years (If need be).

Partner that with that fact that Santana sounds motivated again (The last time I remember that happening was at the 2008 BET Hip-Hop Awards): ”Take her out and trick around/I take her home and dick her down/Send her back to you like ‘Baby I was at my sister house’”. Hopefully this is the Juelz Santana we’ve been waiting for. Remember, his last album did go Platinum.

Wow, Gucci Mane is in another one of my posts? I guess this is what the young kids are listening to these days. On this one Gucci Mane grabs Usher and puts on his best commercial clothes. Not to sound like a hater but the flow on this song is garbage. I don’t even listen to Gucci, but I think even some of his biggest fans will probably gives this a so-so rating. The State vs. Radric Davis is supposed to drop in December.

I know this mixtape series came out last night, and believe this or not, but B-Easy really wanted to do this. He didn’t want his name associated with it, so he passed it to me. I guess he didn’t want you guys to know that he is a closet Gucci Mane fan. Oh well, since he is scared to admit the truth, King Jerm will give the people what they want. How better to celebrate making MTV’s 10 Hottest MC’s list than to release a TRILOGY of mixtapes! WHO DOES THAT? Ya’ll might not like his music, but Gucci loves his fans and he gives them what they want. All I can say about this is…DOWNLOAD. Gucci may never come out with an official album, and if I was him, I WOULDN’T. You can’t transfer this type buzz over to album sales.

Okay, let’s get this straight from the door: I don’t personally listen to Gucci Mane’s music. Never have and probably (And hopefully) never will. The only reason this mixtape will be gracing the front page is because King Jerm is at a Jonas Brothers’ concert unavailable right now and he asked me to post this. I didn’t catch the first DJ Drama assisted The Movie mixtape and I won’t be listening to this one either. I can’t lie though, Gucci does have the streets on smash right about now. But the title of “The World’s Most Ignorant Rapper” rests with La Flare. Uh, Enjoy?

This one goes out to the DIRTY. “Trial Time” is by an artist that goes by the name of The Last Mr. Bigg. he is straight out of Mobile, Alabama and was really doing the Gucci Mane thing back then. He got released from prison in 1998, released an album in 2000 titled Only If You Knew, which had some underground hood bangers on it. The song that made the most noise was “Trial Time”, but it didn’t really get big until 2002 when it hit the radios and video shows that summer. The main draw to Donald Pears isn’t his music, but a $100K diamond that replaced his eye after doctors had to remove it following a 2004 shooting (two times to the dome). Now if you survive a shooting, I think that its okay to have a diamond as an eyeball. If you didn’t know, he is the same guy who did the hook on what might be Three Six Mafia’s best song “Poppin My Collar”.  I’m sure P-Body will disagree with that, but HE knows. Well you knuckleheads, this is King Jerm giving you one of my guilty pleasures, yes the song is ignorant, but I LOVE THIS SONG. If you haven’t heard it, check it out, it’s DOPE, and as always enjoy this installment of Song of the Week!

I’m not gonna lie. I’m not a Twista fan. Don’t get me wrong, he’s got skills and I don’t hate him, but it’s not like I’d stop what I was doing just bump some Twista. His verse on “Slow Jamz” with Kanye and Jamie Foxx in ‘04 is what made him a lot more prolific in the game, but even before that, he was well known and was even in the Guinness Book of World Records for the title of “Fastest MC In The World”. But since then, he’s kind of slowed down a bit when it comes to commercial appeal. Let’s see what he brings to the table this time.

Misunderstood
Featuring Buk; Produced by The Legendary Traxstar
Twista quickly comes on the track to explain the album’s title, Category F5. Tornados are ranked from Category F0-F4, but rarely a large one, an F5, appears, which basically causes total destruction. After this intro, Buk raps on the track and trades verses with Twista. Twista got him, but overall the song is kind of boring and definitely too long. OK song.

American Gangsta
Produced by Toxic & John Gant
Someone might want to tell Twista that the whole “American Gangster” thing was popular back in ‘07 when the Denzel movie came out, but then Jim Jones came out of nowhere and killed the whole thing. However, this song is great. I guess Twista figured if you fell asleep on the intro, he could wake you up with a banger on the second track. Nice job on this one, it’s hot!

Fire
Featuring Lil’ Boosie; Produced by The Legendary Traxstar
This song is all about rolling up and blazing. Twista’s got a nice flow on this one, and he sounds good, so does the chorus. The beat is really chill, as it should be, and Lil’ Boosie steps up on this. Not lyrically, but I heard his Phelps reference in there and I laughed. Great song.

Talk To Me

This is the first dud. Twista sounds strange flowing on this one, the sample just sounds weird, and all together I’m just not feeling it. The beat is nice and soulful, but I can’t hear Twista flowing on a track like this one. It just doesn’t fit. SKIP.

Yellow Light
Featuring R. Kelly; Produced by The Legendary Traxstar
This one of those: “slow down for my girl” songs. R.Kelly’s crooning on the track is great. Twista rides slow beats exceptionally well most of the time, and this definitely no exception. Good song, not really standout worthy, but at same time it’s better than the last track and it’s a good recovery.

Walking On Ice
Featuring OJ Da Juiceman & Gucci Mane; Produced by Zaytoven
A song about ice had to feature Gucci! Despite the features, I’m not gonna trash this one (I think OJ is starting to grow on me). The beat on this is, of course, hard; What else would you expect from Zaytoven? OJ rides it well, Twista, you already know it’s a done deal. Gucci was the weakest on the track, but he still turned in a solid performance. This is the banger of the album, ladies and gentlemen. Great song.

Wetter
Featuring Erika Shevon; Produced by The Legendary Traxstar
I wonder what this one’s about?? Twista is great on the slow tracks, probably why he has so many of them on this album. Lyrically, he’s alright, but his flow is great, as usual. Erika did her thing too, her voice is perfect for this song; picking her was a good choice. Overall a good song. This was the first single off the album, I’m surprised it didn’t make much more noise on the charts.

Featuring Busta Rhymes; Produced by Caution and Velly
The beat on this is hot!! Twista and Busta go head to head on this one, both delivering quick, tight flows that sound great over this banger. Busta shoulda had more content like this on Back On My B.S., it would have made the album much better. Twista had the better performance, but all-in-all it’s still a great song.

Yo Body
Featuring Do Or Die & Johnny P; Produced by The Legendary Traxstar
Damn, another slow/ladies track. Is it me, or is Legendary Traxstar only dishing out the songs for the ladies? Still, this song is better than the other slow tracks, the hook is hot, Twista’s flow continues to be on point and everyone did their thing on this one. Good.

Hustla
Produced by Streetrunner & I.L.O.
Seems like this whole album has a pattern: Slow track, Banger, Slow track, Banger again and again and again. That’s not a diss, I’m happy with the results so far. Back to the song, it’s hot; Streetrunner makes great beats like these and Twista knows how to use them the right way so it all works out. Still, this song sounds just like the other bangers. Again, not bad thing (mostly), just an observation.

Gotta Get Me One
Featuring Static Major; Produced by The Legendary Traxstar
First off, I wanna say R.I.P. to Static Major because he seriously did his thing on this song. This is ANOTHER song for the ladies, but it works because it’s the best and the catchiest. In fact, if Static was still alive today, I guarantee this would be the first single off the album; it feels like “Slow Jamz II”. Twista flows nicely on this one, as usual, and this is definitely my favorite cut off the album.

Featuring Akon; Produced by Good Will & MGI
The beat is kind of weird at first because it’s got a techno vibe to it, but then the drums come in and it’s much better. Still, I’m not really feelin’ this song for a couple of reasons. One, it pales in comparison to the last song and it’s close to exactly the same formula: R&B singer + Rapper= song for the ladies. Two, Twista didn’t come correct on this one: his flow still sounds great, but at the same time lyrically he’s asleep on this one. That’s why I’m kind of leaning towards a skip.

Jump Off

Yes! This track is short but sweet. It’s a banger for sure and the hook is extremely hot! Twista lyrically sounds tired at this point, but the beat and the hook help this song to be slightly above average. Good song.

Wanna See ‘Em Buss
Featuring Liffy Stokes; Produced by Toxic
Looks like to compensate for giving us two tracks for the ladies in a row before, Twista is giving us two bangers in a row. This song is hot, Twista showed up for it but Liffy Stokes was weak. Despite that, the song is good enough…to be another average track.

Birthday

This song actually sounds like a Swizz Beats production with the screwed hook. This song is OK, I mean it’s nothing that I would personally bump. I guess it’s an alright way to end the album, but he could have chosen a better song.

Bottom Line:
This is why I like writing for nappyafro.com; if I wasn’t, I probably wouldn’t have ever given this album the time of day. I’d probably be too busy waiting for Loso’s Way (which I personally think will flop). Still, it was a solid listen, thoroughly enjoyable. It’s got everything you need: the bangers, the songs for the ladies, the songs to blaze to, and even the soulful songs (even though it wasn’t my thing personally). Even though Twista made a great album, let’s be honest here: it won’t crack the Top 20 when B-Easy hits us with the numbers for the week. That is, unless ya’ll go out and cop the album!! Trust me, you won’t be dissapointed.
