It’s funny that he shouted out Little Brother on this track cause after a few listens, it (Produced by Boi-1da & Al Khaaliq) sounds like something they would rap over. Is this really the first single off Thank Me Later? Not saying it’s bad though, I guess I expected a Weezy or Jay or Yeezy feature. What did y’all think?

A little background info on this one:

Our homies over at Tha Carter Cartel (Specifically longh0rn) are always putting together these massive projects of certain artists. It could be anybody from Ryan Leslie to Kanye West but these projects contains massive amounts of music sometime tipping over the 500mb scale. I’ve always wanted to help out with getting shine for what they were doing so when I saw 2009 All Rookie Team Project (Seeing as Saule did a whole team theme recently with Hip-Hop groups), I was like; “Yea, this is the one”. Plus with the upcoming NBA All Star Game it all makes sense. All the credit should be due to longh0rn for putting together all this music; the only thing I did was slap on the banner you see above. I’ll let him explain in his own words as we look at the team and pass out the download links.

Small Forward: J. Cole [Link]

Jermaine Cole is the small forward on the 2009 All Rookie Team. Dude came out of my state and made it in the game. Not too long ago he was signed as Roc Nation’s first artist. He is now going on tour with Jay-Z, N.E.R.D & Lupe Fiasco. I can say everyday I play The Warm Up, it is easy one of the best mixtapes of last year but people sleep on it. Here’s my collection of his work, I’m sure I have all of it because not alot of material has been released.

Bobby Ray aka B.o.B. is your starting power forward on the 2009 All Rookie Team. Bobby Ray has been compared to Andre 3000 with his rapping style and can actually play the guitar unlike Lil’ Wayne. As the staff member that broke Drake to the site…ahem…It is my PLEASURE to announce his So Far Gone as nappyafro’s Mixtape Of The Year winner for 2009. If you don’t agree, let’s go over some simple facts about this mixtape. He’s nominated for a Grammy from a mixtape that came prior to any album release or even major label deal. This mixtape single-handedly propelled Drake into the stratosphere and has Vibe calling him Hip Hop’s new religion. It’s hard to deny that “Successful” alone, reintroduced the world to Trey Songz and reignited his career as well. Lastly, who releases a free mixtape THEN turns around and takes that mixtape and sells over 200k copies? Ok, so for those of you that are hard to please, MTV and Complex Magazine agree with us with Complex going as far as calling this one of the top 5 mixtapes this decade. Simply put, Drake has managed to put his fingerprint on a career that may see him release classics in R&B and Hip-Hop, and that is proof that he is So Far Gone from the nearest competitors for this award.

We all know that Hip-Hop and sports aren’t the same, sometimes too many stars don’t equate into a championship. One thing about YM is that if everyone plays their role, a championship isn’t out of the question. We have been hearing about Young Moolah for years, now it’s time to see if the hype was justified.

The reserves are carrying this album so far. The Weezy features are really hooks, and the role players are keeping the team afloat. IMPRESSED.

This is what we have been waiting on, not really because we got that on “Every Girl”, but Weezy and Drizzy on the same track (Like they haven’t done this before…heard So Far Gone?). The production on this song was too plain. The beat was easily beat up by the crew. I applaud the effort on lyrics, but they lost me with the production.

Play In My Band

The beat from this one could have been switched on the last one and the song would have been FIRE. Once again we get to see Rock & Roll Weezy on this one, and let me tell you he didn’t disappoint. I know I said that “New Shit” was my fave. Change that, (NO H2O) this is. I really was not on board with Rock & Roll Weezy, but he might be the one to bridge this generation to the Rock/Hip-Hop trend. DOPE.

He was going up against some stiff competition, sandwiched between Weezy and Minaj, him just keeping up made me happy. FIRE!

I was in the club recently when this came on…THE PLACE WENT CRAZY!!! The two hottest rappers on a song together equals BANGER! Line of the song…”You niggas softer than Roseanne’s son”. Are you serious? Stop it Wayne! I might be biased by the club atmosphere, but that is the feel you want when your song comes on.

This is one of those songs that you have to sit back and let Nicki do her thing. She set the song on FIRE, but the person who made my head turn quick…TYGA. I really didn’t know he had it in him. *salutes* Of course Weezy shows up, but he got outshined by Lewinsky and Tyga on this one. DOPE SONG!

Why did he choose this name? David Banner on the beat so you know you are getting something FLAME. The boys get down on this one, but the standout again is your girl Nicki. She is going to be a hard free agent to keep on the team when it’s time for negotiations.

They end the album with a full fledge posse cut, everybody get a chance to spit on the mic. I have to say this was reminiscent to the old No Limit Soldier songs that usually start an album, but I think they placed this one in the right place. Good way to end it.

Bottom Line:
This was the first offering from Young Money, and considering their audience, this will be considered a good album. The Hip-Hop snobs will surely avoid this album because of the radio hits “Every Girl” and “Bedrock” but there are some pretty good songs that even they can appreciate. The Nicki Minaj appearances gave the album a different feel that male only albums lack. This album will be a stocking stuffer this Christmas, and those people will be pretty happy with this. If Young Money keeps this up, look for them to be one of the new age Hip-Hop “dynasties”. How about a hand for Birdman? He has put together two championships teams in two different decades. The respect for Bryan “Birdman” Williams has always been mixed. While he will always be applauded for building his New Orleans based Cash Money Records from nothing (With his brother Slim), his music abilities have always been called into question. Personally, I think this isn’t exactly true. Yes, most of the time when a featured verse of Birdman comes up, I’m usually not checking for it. But to say Baby never spit anything notable is a false (Example: “#1 Stunna”, His verse on “Playa Why You Hatin’”, “What Happened To That Boy”). Of course these moments are rare but they exist.

In the past Birdman’s album have received modest success. Nothing really mind blowing in terms of material, but what do expect from a self proclaimed “game spitter”. Now Stunna is releasing his 4th album Pricele$$. And yes, it once again heavily features his son Lil’ Wayne. And yes, Drake makes a few appearances too. Does this make Pircele$$ worth your precious time? Let’s see.

1. Intro

On the albums intro, Birdman goes into the usual: He’s from uptown, his youngn’ wears the crown, shouts out to Cash Money/Young Money, and throw in some bird calls for good measure. Besides that, the beat is nice and has a big feel to it. Lyrics? Uh, “The pussy wet so the pussy got a new plug”. *Shrugs*

2. Been About Money
Produced by I.N.F.O.
The one thing that jumps out on this track is that it used a Birdman sample as the hook (“Been about big money. B-b-big money”). Don’t ask me where the sample is from (It’s “Youn Ain’t Know”. Thanks Pitbull) . I also don’t have to tell you what Baby’s topic here: “Keep some extra clips/Keep some extra diamonds/Keep some new whips”. The beat is slow and what you’d expect from Stunna (It even has bird calls in the background. Get used to that…). Average track.

3. Money To Blow
Featuring Drake & Lil’ Wayne; Produced by Drumma Boy
Banger. Yea, I said it. Drake kills this one from his verse to the hook (Wasn’t this his song first?). The Drumma Boy beat is strip club ready for sure and even Weezy comes to do cleanup on the last verse and states the know infamous Young Money/Cash Money strategy (“And we gonna be alright if we put Drake on every hook”). The weak link of course is Birdman. But it can be overlooked here.

4. Money Machine
Produced by Howard “X-Fyle” Metoyer
This one is similar to the previous “Been About Money” as it also used a Cash Money sample for the hook. This time is uses Wayne’s “Bitch I paid/Is all I gotta say” (I think it’s from “Pop Bottles” “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy” (c) Pitbull). At first I was getting ready to write this song off until it got to the halfway mark and the beat changes up. Then shit gets kinda live. Plus Birdman sounds okay here too; “The motor change nigga/So the watch with the meter/Catier face every time that I see her”. Standout.

5. Pricele$$
Featuring Lil’ Wayne; Produced by Jim Jonsin
This wouldn’t surprise me if this was from a Rebirth session seeing that on the hook Weezy is doing his Rock/Auto-Tune thing. I guess it fits because the beat is definitely Rock & Roll inspired. But for some reason, the mix of this and Birdman uninspired lyrics don’t match up (“Keep a bad bitch and put the diamonds on my teeth/Presidential suites/Rumors bout me”).

6. Bring It Back
Featuring Lil’ Wayne; Produced by Laurent “Slick” Cohen
This may have been better if they would have put more room between it and the previous track. They’re both similar. Wayne’s just on the hook again (Again with Auto-Tune). Whatever spark this track had was shot down with Baby’s lazy rhymes: “Flip another hundred/Get another hundred/Spend another hundred/Burn another hundred/Fuck another hundred”. This track will make you feel as bored as Stunna sounds.

7. Nightclub
Produced by Howard “X-Fyle” Metoyer
For a track called “Nightclub”, this track is surprisingly slow. Actually it’s kinda lackluster. The piano heavy production and Birdman lyrics gets that way after the first few lines. It’s not a skip but don’t play this while heading to the nightclub unless you don’t want energy. Ehh…

8. 4 My Town (Play Ball)
Featuring Drake & Lil’ Wayne; Produced Boi-1da
Almost the same formula as “Money To Blow” and while not as successful, it’s a pickup from the previous song. I wasn’t in love with the beat but it works. This is not one to look for Birdman but Weezy does have the line of the song; “I’m a big smoker/I’m a little drinker/The peace sign is just a trigger with a middle finger”. You may have already heard Drizzy verse as it had been chopped up as used by a few rappers already (Soulja Boy for example).

9. Hustle
Featuring Gudda Gudda & Lil’ Wayne; Produced by Drew Correa
The hook on this takes this one out before it even really gets started. Of course it’s Weezy on the Auto-Tune but that’s not really it; it’s just not executed well for this beat and sounds like a freestyle. Gudda does okay (Sidenote: I just realized he was from Sqad Up). As for Stunna, uh, you know what to expect.

10. Shinin’
Featuring & Produced by T-Pain
T-Pain comes through and does double duty. But Teddy doesn’t bring his A-game (Would you?). The beat sounds like it may be just a placeholder and would worked for almost any rapper with it 808’s and what not. But sense it’s Birdman, he can’t really take the song to the next level (Or the first level). Generic track. If you already heard “Got Money” by T-Pain and Weezy, you’ve already heard a better version of this.

11. Mo Milli
Featuring Drake & Bun B; Produced Boi-1da
Dang, Stunna gets Drizzy to help out for a third time. Actually, its just Birdman rapping first and standing back as Drake and Bun (Who wasn’t on the early version of this song) do their thing. The nicely done beat by Boi-1da sounds like a mixture of Houston and “A Milli”. By the way, is this a sequel to “A Milli”? Check this song out for the Bun B and Drake verses.

12. I Want It All
Featuring Kevin Rudolf & Lil’ Wayne; Produced by Kevin Rudolf
I always wondered why Cash Money signed rocker Kevin Rudolf. I hope it wasn’t to collaborate with Birdman and do his hooks, because they don’t mix well. The whole techno sound here doesn’t work either. Wayne shows up and leaves fast too. Nah.

13. Always Strapped
Featuring Lil’ Wayne & Mack Maine; Produced by Mr. Beatz & Lil’ C
By now I hoped you heard this track. I’m surprised they this version instead of the original (Which just featured Birdman & Wayne) or even the remix with Rick Ross & Jeezy. The beat is still hard on this one and Mack Mane’s “I fuck over you like I’m sexing on a top bunk” line is always cool. Worth another listen.

Bottom Line:
Another Birdman album in the books and to me it’s what it’s always been. You look at the album and basically check for the Wayne features (Now add Drake to that list too) and almost skip everything else (Stunna solo on “Money Machine” was good though). I think one thing that really is shown here is Birdman inability to do a whole album. His rhymes are repetitive as is his subject matter to take. Then again, if you are buying this album, you probably don’t care about that. If you like Birdman’s previous efforts, this one will fit right in. If you just looking for the features, you probably should just get those track and move on.

I guess we can stop bitching about the lack of Hip-Hop album releases (Well, at least for this week), because we have 7 Hip-Hop debuts on the charts this week. Yeah. I can’t even do any rambling in this intro. Let’s just get to the numbers….

I’m most happy for Kid Cudi this week as his Man On The Moon: The End Of Day moves over a 100,000 units and lands at #4. For a new artist; especially a new Hip-Hop artist, this is great. With all the hype surrounding releases by Jay-Z and Raekwon the prior week, it’s good to see Kid Cudi still rewarded for putting out a good album. Drizzy Drake finally makes his official debut on the charts with his career defining So Far Gone. I previously stated what I felt the retail release of this album, but I guess I now see that selling 70,000 copies of a mixtape that came out for free in the beginning of this year is easy money. This does tell me that Drake has the ability to do some major numbers when Thank Me Later comes out next year. [It's over 8 months old, but you can still read V-G's original review of the So Far Gone mixape here]

I honestly thought Lil’ Boosie’s 2nd studio album Superbad: The Return Of Boosie Bad Azz would do better numbers. Not to say that coming in at #7 is a bad thing, but with the way the leak was handled (Jay-Z should take notes) and Bad Azz’s following, I figured his fans would support better. But this may be smalls potatoes to what Boosie is dealing with right now. [V-G comes through again. Check out his review of Superbad here]

T-Double-D returns to the charts and keeps it thug with his 8th album Finally Famous: Born A Thug, Still A Thug. This album may not grab another plaque for Trick Daddy (Surprisingly he has 6; mostly Platinum); but it’s the first one on his own label Dunk Ryders Records. I guess it’s still a win for the 305. [King Jerm gives Trick his props in his review for Finally Famous here]

Wow. New Boyz almost sold 10,000 albums with their new album Skinny Jeanz And A Mic. Um, I really don’t have too much else to say about this. Maybe I’m too old to “jerk”. [V-G has been on fire recently! He also reviewed Skinny Jeanz And A Mic...even though we didn't ask him too. Look at that here]

KRS-One & Buckshot collaborative effort Survival Skills lands on the charts at #62. Hey, it could have been worse; M.O.P.’s new album Foundation, that didn’t even chart this week. Seeing that the last few releases by both KRS and Buckshot didn’t do this well, 8,600 is sales could be much worse. The only album we didn’t review this week was Q-Tip’s de-shelved Kamaal The Abstract.
