With the good response that Freaknik: The Musical received this week, I couldn’t help but think of another animated show on Adult Swim that had a rapper’s co-sign. In 2007, David Banner helped create the show That Crook’d ‘Sipp. Here’s a quick summary:

With the good response that Freaknik: The Musical received this week, I couldn’t help but think of another animated show on Adult Swim that had a rapper’s co-sign. In 2007, David Banner helped create the show That Crook’d ‘Sipp. Here’s a quick summary:

The Beauregard family, much like their Mississippi mansion, is falling apart. Relics of the Old South, this dysfunctional clan sits in stark contrast to the modern crunk-fueled Dirty South that has grown up around their crumbling estate, Frenchman’s Bend.

And if you find the art style here familiar, you’re not mistaken. While the pilot for That Crook’d Sipp was to originally receive 6 additional episodes, that plan was later scrapped in order to create Freaknik: The Musical.

To say that the movies I choose for Friday Night ‘Fro are varied may be an understatement.
This week’s pick is a little special seeing that I actually know the makers of this film. If you hang out in the comments section you make have seen the name Dark Angel. Hell, if you’ve been with nappyafro in the beginning you may even remember that the young lady used to write for us.

The Chase is a short film that Dark Angel (aka Jayivey Thrasher) made to enter to the annual Campus Moviefest. And even though the The Chase didn’t win the top prize at the festival (They got robbed!), I still wanted to show some love to the cast and crew. Enjoy the movie at the top of the post and then check out the spankin’ new trailer at the bottom.

I consider myself a slight movie expert; mainly because I watch a lot of them. So when I saw the trailer for Run! Bitch Run! last year I automatically assumed that it was a Grindhouse style trailer and there was no way there could be an actual movie attached to this (The trailer is above and pretty funny).

Months later, someone pointed out to me that yes Run! Bitch Run! is actually a REAL movie. And I watched it.

Now don’t get it twisted. This is not a pick for Friday Night ‘Fro because this is a great movie. It’s low budget and most of the time seems to be made for the sake of shock value. A lotta stuff in this film that will offend most people for the gratuitous nudity, violence, rape, language, & drug use. But I guess pushing to envelope is where Run! Bitch Run! holds some of its charms. It’s a homage to old school “rape & revenge” films like Ms. 45, I Spit On Your Grave, & The Last House On The Left. Plus when you see a woman masturbate with a plunger you either get offended or laugh…or get turned on (Your sick by the way).

So yeah, I guess I’m just putting it up because it’s something different (And the cool trailer).

Check it out and tell us what you think.

Last week I had a chance to catch the documentary More Than A Game. While I thought it was basically the story of LeBron James’ rise to NBA super stardom, it was actually about him and four of his teammates through the trials and tribulations of high school basketball in Akron, Ohio. And it was a lot better than I thought. Whoever had the idea to document these times of LeBron and his St. Vincent–St. Mary High School basketball team had enough foresight to see that all five teammates each had compelling stories.

From a music standpoint, don’t look for the Drake, Kanye, Eminem, & Weezy cut “Forever”, Jay-Z’s “History”, or Chris Brown/Esther Dean’s “Drop It Low”. All these songs were “inspired” by More Than A Game and honestly that doesn’t take away from the film.

So hit the link and tell us what you think about More Than A Game.

Watch: More Than A Game

Sidenote #2: Putting up links of movies are easier for me and you. Megaupload video watching doesn’t let you watch the whole movie.

Yea, I’d written off Nicolas Cage too. Then I saw The Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans (Plus the trailer to Kick-Ass but that’s another post). Surprisingly, The Bad Lieutenant is not the straight-to-DVD quality I was expecting. Cage, from his mannerism to his speech, does a superb job as the role of dirty cop Terrence McDonagh. It’s not only him though, Xzibit (As Big Fate) has his best performance not pimpin’ out broken down cars for 20 somethings. The rest of the cast consists of such actors Eve Mendes, Val Kimer, Jennifer Coolidge, & Brad Dourif. Check out the plot:

The main character is Terrence McDonagh, a New Orleans Police sergeant, who starts out as a good cop, receiving a medal and a promotion to lieutenant for heroism during Hurricane Katrina.

During his heroic act, McDonagh injures his back and later becomes addicted to prescription pain medication. McDonagh struggles with addictions and finds himself involved with drug dealer Big Fate, who is suspected of murdering a family of African immigrants.

So yea, The Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans wasn’t bad at all. Enjoy this edition of Friday Night ‘Fro.

There’s a few loves in my life. One of those strong ones is Hip-Hop. But honestly, another one is watching movies. I sometimes think that if I was rich, all I would do is listen to music, travel, and watch movies (Okay, sex is in there somewhere too).

Of course with my love of films and 2009 being over, I took a look at all of the movies I saw last year that came out in ‘09. At first I was gonna rank the 10 best films in 2009, but that’s been done to death at this point (And also done with more expertise than me). So why not just put up a full list of all the movies I saw from 2009? Yea that’ll work.

Not too bad right? I actually wish I would have seen more movies because I know some guys who put my list to shame in terms of quantity (But remember these are only the movies I watched that were RELEASED in 2009).

Compiling this list and looking over it brought a few thoughts to my head:
*Still mad I didn’t get to see Avatar?
*Why and how the hell did I let myself see Fired Up, Miss March, AND, I Love You Beth Cooper? (Hours of my life I can’t get back)
*Still mad I didn’t get to see Mystery Team.
*Big budget never means good movies (I’m looking at you 2010 & Transformers 2).
*Any movies with “land” in the title and starring Jesse Eisenberg will probably be good.
*Still mad I didn’t get to see Sherlock Holmes.
*If it’s animated, it’s a good chance I’ll watch it (9, Astro Boy, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, Coraline, Monsters vs Aliens, Up).
*Don’t watch Food Inc. if you eat a lotta fast food (It’s been called one of the scariest movies of 2009…because it’s real).
*I’m happy the last move I saw of 2009 was Up In The Air (George Clooney is the coolest white guy on the planet).

So. What movies did YOU see In 2009? Which was the best?

Sidenote: And sorry, this IS the first Friday Night ‘Fro with no movie. I’ll catch you next go round.

You eyes are not deceiving you, I’m doing a Friday Night ‘Fro on Saturday. Other circumstances prevented me from posting this movie yesterday. And to be real with y’all, I haven’t even watched this movie. The only thing I do know is that Forest Whitaker, Taraji P. Henson, Lil’ Wayne, & Bow Wow are in it, and what I read in the plot summary:

A year after Hurricane Katrina, Al Collins, a high school basketball coach in Marrero, Louisiana, assembles a team of players who had previously attended five different schools before the disaster and leads them on the path to the state championships.

I guess I also wanted to a least post something before Monday. Enjoy (And tell me what you think…).

But seeing that Janky Promoters (Or The Janky Promoters as it says in the opening credits) is based off the shady show promoters in the Hip-Hop and the music business in general, why the hell not? Plus it has Young Jeezy in the movie playing himself.

Janky Promoters is easily the worst Ice Cube movie and you can quickly see why it didn’t make it to the movie theaters (Mike Epps isn’t at his best here either). Not to say there isn’t any funny parts…just not that many. The cast is the usual suspects (Darris Love, Tamala Jones, Glenn Plummer, Lil’ JJ, etc.). One person told me that it’s best to watch this movie while high to up the comedy. since I don’t smoke, I guess I’m outta luck.

Check out “Modesto’s Finest” and tell us what you think.

Sidenote: I would have uploaded a better quality version of this film but your boy B-Easy got the flu. I’m in a NyQuil fog right now (No Lil’ Wayne though).

A coming of age story about an inner-city youth raised by a hardworking single mother. When his dream of becoming a basketball player fails to materialize, he finds himself employed in a supermarket. After his mother is tragically gunned down, Clarence (50 Cent) is consumed by revenge and takes up a life of crime in order to support his younger brother.

I thought they already did this kind of thing for the Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ movie? Enjoy.
