2008 DMF Of The Year: DMX (by King Jerm)
January 8, 2009 by nappyafro.com Staff · 3 Comments

When I chosen to do this column, I questioned whether giving him this award would really help in the rehabilitation. However, this is nappyafro, and votes were cast and while it was close, DMX prevailed as the winner. Why you ask? The one time face of Def Jam was arrested more times than Pacman Jones! Nine times in a nine months has to be a record somewhere. His arrests range from speeding to identity theft. Read more
Why Jay-Z Should Be Man Of The Year (by SBK)
January 7, 2009 by nappyafro.com Staff · 2 Comments

Now when I saw the category of “Man Of The Year” I didn’t know exactly what to think because in my mind that would definitely go to the President-elect Barack Obama for his major accomplishment. But I’m guessing that we’re keeping it Hip-Hop (like Barack isn’t Hip-Hop) and with that in mind, my choice has to be Jay-Z for the year. Now I know everybody already thinks Read more
2008 Songs Of The Year (Staff Picks)
January 7, 2009 by nappyafro.com Staff · 14 Comments

At first we were gonna do a recap this year’s most notable songs featured in our Song of the Week column. But seeing how some of the songs weren’t actually made in 2008, it really wouldn’t have worked. So instead of voting for a single “Song of the Year”, we thought; “Why not just let each staff member pick their favorite 5 songs of the year?” So here they are. No voting. No debates. Read more
Eminem feat. Dr. Dre & 50 Cent - “Crack A Bottle” (by B-Easy)
January 6, 2009 by nappyafro.com Staff · 7 Comments

So as you know by now, we really aren’t the “throw up a new song every 5 seconds” type of website. But as usual, we make exceptions. With all the talk about Eminem’s upcoming album Relapse, it’s funny no one here mentioned “Crack A Bottle”. It first showed up late last year on Big Mike’s mixtape 4th Quarter Pressure Part 2 (Then called “Number 1″). Read more
2008 Album Of The Year: Nas|Untitled (by Saule Wright)
January 6, 2009 by nappyafro.com Staff · 19 Comments

Hip-Hop has always been a reflection of a small segment of the global community. Now Hip-Hop has become a global community. In such a climate, you get a lot of pressure to conform to the instant hit’s now (“ringtone era”) and leave consciousness in the underground circuit. Nas refused to conform and offered us one of the best albums released this year, and one of the best all time. Read more
2008 Man Of The Year: Lil’ Wayne (by B-Easy)
January 5, 2009 by nappyafro.com Staff · 16 Comments

In 2008, my views on Lil’ Wayne were mixed. While I wrote articles like 10 “Simple” Reasons Why Lil’ Wayne Is NOT The Greatest Rapper Of Alive, I also wrote articles like The Three Most Memorable Verses Of 2008 (Which I ranked Weezy’s second verse on “A Milli” at #2). So me writing this article awarding Lil’ Wayne the coveted title of nappyafro’s Man Of The Year Read more

Friday Night ‘Fro: The Wrestler (by B-Easy)
January 2, 2009 by nappyafro.com Staff · Leave a Comment

Just because Saul Wright’s previous name was inspired by one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, don’t think he’s the only staff member that knows pro wrestling. I might not be into pro wrestling now but I used to be a big fan: I’ve read The Dynamite Kid’s autobiography Pure Dynamite (as well as Mick Foley’s 1st & 2nd books), I own a copy of the documentary Read more
The Numbers Game: Kanye Goes Platinum (by B-Easy)
January 1, 2009 by nappyafro.com Staff · 6 Comments

Damn, it’s 2009 already? After almost doing this column 40 times now, it still feels like I just started this yesterday. What does ‘09 hold for Hip-Hop on the charts? We’ll see a new Eminem album, maybe Detox, hopefully Blueprint 3 as well as a host of other releases (January looks slack as hell by the way). But before we get to that, here’s the first edition of the Numbers Game for the new year. Read more
Song of the Week: Skillz - “2008 Rap Up” (by King Jerm)
December 31, 2008 by nappyafro.com Staff · 13 Comments
This is one of those songs that most of the Hip-Hop world looks for every year. I didn’t think that Skillz was going to make one this year, but he did. He did it big last year with a video, I wonder if he’ll do the same this year. Skillz is a talented artist who ghostwrites for a lot of artists. Its a shame that he might never break over into the mainstream. But some people don’t need the limelight to shine. Read more
