Every so often it seems like Snoop Dogg catches the same flash in the pan that stoked his legendary 90’s run. I haven’t yet listened to Bush, so I can’t say whether or not that album does the same; however, Snoop’s contribution to DJ Drama’s Beach City mixtape, “Back Up”, is a nostalgic cruise through the city in the sharpest coupe on the streets.
Scoop Deville’s production on this one is adeptly restrained, and Snoop fills in the spaces with his trademark flow and an effortless sounding hook. The breakdown in the last third of the song is also a welcome surprise. After this song, although I hadn’t checked for them before, both Beach City and Bush are high on my to-do list.
