Sample Clearance: Esther Phillips – “That’s All Right With Me”

From A Whisper To A Scream

I guess you could say this Sample column is inspired by Keson Brown’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive review. When I first heard J. Cole‘s “St. Tropez”, I immediately thought, “Oh, Cole used that Mobb Deep ‘Give Up The Goods’ beat”. But in the review, Keson pointed out and made me remember the original.

Of course the origin of both samples come from Esther Phillips“That’s All Right With Me”, originally released on the album From a Whisper to a Scream back in 1971. Surprisingly I already had it downloaded in my iTunes and forgot about it. What I also forgot is how good the original song is. R.I.P. Esther.
