Born Sinner is definitely an album that demands your attention. After each listen, the record has grown on me. The concept becomes clearer and the track sequence really starts to come off witty. Lyrically, he does a great job expressing how numerous sins have come into his life since being signed to Roc Nation. As original as the album is, it still has its flaws. As much as I love sampling, Cole doesn’t really get creative as he should diggin’ in the crates. He basically takes “Da Art of Storytelling” and “Electric Relaxation” without flipping the beat at all. At times, a few hooks come off generic and feels like he’s trying too hard. Overall, it’s a very good album, but it’s not album of the year material. I wouldn’t say one track can be skipped or even considered average, but I felt there should’ve been more distinct standouts. Maybe I was expecting too much (classic?). J. Cole is mad talented and Born Sinner proves it. I just hope as time pasts, he will grow more into himself.
