The Numbers Game: Styles P, DJ Shadow, & Dessa

The charts this week wasn’t as busy as last week, but we still had some movement in terms of Hip-Hop/Rap releases.

LOX member Styles P released his 4th solo album last week with Master Of Ceremonies. The fact that the album charted at #33 and sold over 11,000 units isn’t bad at all considering that a lotta people didn’t even know the album was coming out (Also note that Jason Derulo had a 13,000 debut last week). [Check out our review of Styles P's Master Of Ceremonies here]

Also dropping a 4th album is DJ Shadow with The Less You Know, The Better. For some reason, I thought DJ Shadow was DJ Honda, but then I realized that I knew barely anything about DJ Shadow (I do know that he has a large vinyl collection). Either way, The Less You Know, The Better debuts at #149 and sells 3,400 units in it’s first week.

Another artist I don’t know much about is Dessa. I do know she’s down with Doomtree and she more poet than MC (I think) but I haven’t heard a lotta of the music . He album Castor, The Twin debuts at #177 with 2,500 albums sold.

Hip-Hop/R&B album sales for the week of 10/4/11

Young Barry White. The geek out of the bunch. He is also Jay-Z’s biggest fan. He looks like your cousin from the burbs. He is “Pro Black” (not anti-white, just “Pro Black”). Probably the wittiest out of the bunch. It is said that he got fired from the same job three times.

    wtf wtt is platinum?

    • http://nappyafro.com B-Easy

      Platinum = 1,000,000
      Gold = 500,000

  • Rickjamesbitch

    Cole will definitely go gold.. It’ll be a while though

  • http://nappyafro.com King Jerm

    WTT is struggling to go Plat. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • saule wright

    yo, that Dessa is nice!

    WTT isn’t struggling to go Platinum. It’s still in the top 20, with a mild hit, and pushing 20k+ a week.

    By the time it falls off the charts, it will have pushed 1.2-1.3 million. Hardly what I’d consider struggling…

      So you think an album featuring 2 of the biggest names in Hip-Hop NOT going Platinum in 10 weeks is okay?

      Tell me you’re not that dumb.

    Keep in mind that the release dates and fact that some stores didnt carry the deluxe edition hurt sales… Their may be people who said to hell with the complicity of it and just downloaded it…It wasn’t even available in stores until the friday it dropped. Then there aren’t any major hits. It is weird, but it isn’t like they are pushing it to the maximum. we still waiting on a new single with a video.

    You gotta give them their props though, it didnt leak at all up until the release date in this day & age is amazing.

    I’ll tell you this much, King Jerm stays on his agenda without relent. good lawd. He makes it sound like WTT sold like Rah Digga. Two of the biggest names on a “novelty” album. These type of albums never do numbers unless I’m mistaken.

      Just saying…Kanye and Jay both move units…its just funny to me that they aren’t plat yet. Call it an agenda if you want. lol.

      • saule wright

        Jay moves units, Ye moves units, but fans that are staunch Jay fans or Ye fans probably don’t feel the album like that. This def ain’t like BP3, it’s closer to MBDTF but it’s soo much like that, maybe they don’t feel the need to run out and buy part 2. Iono, but just sayin, even without going plat, they’ve outsold a LOT of mofos this year.

      • http://nappyafro.com DuB

        How many Rick Ross albums have gone plat? We are in different times. Rozay is probably a top rapper when it comes to popularity and he doesn’t have 1 platinum album.

        • P-Body

          Co-sign with Dub this time around

        • http://nappyafro.com King Jerm

          Uh…you on your P-Body shit with this one DuB. What Rawse got to do with it? We are in the same times that Ye and Jay went plat. Let’s not forget that the album didn’t leak. But ya’ll go ahead and keep making excuses.

          • MrHusein

            Drake and Nicki went platinum, their shit leaked. And Ross is just as popular. And he’s been doing work lately

          • http://nappyafro.com DuB

            Lol ok after he cosigned me I feel like I should refine my statement a little. In 2011 who has gone platinum. The only person I can think of is Wayne, and he hasn’t done well in the weeks following his first week. Today its starting to seem like gold is like going double platinum. I’m not saying I’m not surprised by WTT’s sales but I also look at the rest of the years releases and they have exceeded almost everyone (with the exception of Weezy F.)
