First off, Brother is a reference to the fact that he’s a Muslim. Second of all, his parents are both black, but he is an albino. Third of all, given that he’s promoting a more positive message of racial unity than 90% of rappers out there, don’t sleep on him for his name. It’s not as if he’s using a black term in mockery – his albums are generally centered around promoting the respect for other cultures on both sides of the fence, and he’s smart enough to respect black culture rather than thinking that he can “move beyond racism” and call people whatever he wants. Brother was originally a term for someone involved in black culture anyway, not necessarily black. IE: A white guy who marched along with Martin Luther King Jr. for black rights and steeped himself in black culture would be called a brother as much as a black guy who did the same thing. Conversely a black guy who was seen as trying to distance himself from black culture would NOT have been called a brother.

IMO this is exactly what’s wrong with hip hop today.
I swear there isn’t a demographic on earth that’s more ignorant that hip hop fans.
This is so sad cos hip hop is meant to be about struggling and hope, i.e, intellectual.
Nowadays though, it’s all about “thug” and “fuck that”.
I can’t even turn on the radio anymore without feeling ashamed of calling myself a hip hop head.
Brother Ali & Rhymesayers are one of the few still bringing originality to the game, P, don’t go bringing that ignorant shit to this table.
